INDONESIAN MASKS A Brief Introduction Masks are important cultural icons that help preserve tradition, religion and history. This is especially true of Indonesia and Indonesian masks. Indonesian islands like Bali, Java, Lombok all have different types of masks with cultural significance that symbolize people, deities, demons and more. The masks are also very important in passing down oral history from generation to generation. Unique characters are symbolised and embodied within a mask. In some cases masks can be used to guard off evil spirits. It would take a life time or more to collect all the mask from Indonesia and to fully understand them.

JERO GEDE Looks like a grotesque monster but is actually a harmless clown. His fangs symbolise a character pursuing needs that are never satisfied.

BARONG MACAN This barong resembles a tiger. The tiger is the keeper of balance between the earthly and spiritual world. Macan protects villages from the harmful influences of dead souls.

SIDA KARYA PUTIH A mesmerising, powerful character who wards off evil spirits. The white face symbolises purity. The strange expression of his mouth, his leer, reflects that things are not always what they appear to be.
