P15342 Linear RF Measurement System Kate Gunderson Matt Chauncey Will Tourtillotte
Background Automated Slotted Coaxial Line utilized for Electromagnetic Fields Lab – Measures standing wave behavior of applied sinusoidal wave pattern from a network analyzer – Designed and constructed in 1997, showing signs of aging – Bulky and heavy
Requirements Redesign current fixture Update relevant technologies Match performance of current system Eliminate mechanical reliability issues Automated system measurements using MATLAB Durable Easily accessible components User’s manual Design for manufacturability
Proposed System Architecture
Breakdown of System Architecture PART 1: – System Base/Motor Mount & Motor Couplings PART 2: – Detailed Design Decomposition and Associated Circuitry Needed PART 3: – MATLAB Network Analyzer Data Acquisition Code PART 4: – Microcontroller Work
PART 1 System Base/Motor Mount & Motor Couplings
System Base Several different configurations proposed – Needed to proceed with a prototype that is built for manufacturability… – Material that would resist creep and would rigidly support hardware – Our recommended solutions? Slightly modify all slotted line assemblies into a single configuration. Perform maintenance on each slotted line – Realign rods, clean measurement head and rods, etc.
Motor and Slotted Line Couplings Four major options for couplers: – Flexible Drive Shaft – Helical Flexible Shaft Coupling (clamp-on) – Helical Flexible Shaft Coupling (set screws) – High Precision Bellows Flexible Shaft Coupling Ultimately concluded motor was not binding – Created a new motor mount to further reduce possibility of misalignment issues
Final Assembly Slotted Line Enclosure for Power Supply and Microcontroller Custom Motor Mount and Base *5 pounds lighter than previous design!
