FORGET WHAT YOU KNOW ABOUT DISABILITY GBRT Talent ID Coach (Paralympic Programme) – Hannah Lawton

London 2012 they were SUPERHUMANS “We want to change public attitudes towards disability, celebrate the excellence of Paralympic sport and to enshrine from the very outset that the two Games are integrated whole” (Lord Coe)

Attitude, barriers, society… If people’s attitudes were to change and there was effective public policy that legislated for the removal of environmental barriers, then many of the problems associated with disability would disappear. (Morris, 1991) Disablement lies in the construction of society, not in the physical condition of the individual. However, this argument is usually rejected precisely because to accept it involves recognising the extent to which we are not merely unfortunate but are directly oppressed by a hostile social environment. (Drake, 1996)

Link: Perceptions around Disability

Nearly two-thirds (65%) of people have admitted they avoid disabled people because they don't know how to act around them. (BT - 'Ready, Willing and Disabled Event’ 2011)

James Fox “It feels odd making the transition to Para-Rowing after nine years of able-bodied, but I’m really enjoying it. My sights are clearly set on the Rio Games” Birthdate: 02/05/1992 Hometown: Peterborough Education: Brunel University Began rowing in: 2003 Clubs: Peterborough City RC, University of London Boat Club Original coach(es): Brian Young, Tom Dyson James started rowing aged 11 through a taster session at Peterborough RC. He went on to represent Britain in able-bodied junior rowing and has won the Fawley Cup at Henley Royal Regatta. James now qualifies for Para-Rowing due to restricted ankle movement.
