SHOOTING FUNDAMENTALS
Eyes – what to look at – front of rim Feet – Balance – point at rim or angle Shooting foot – Forward and at middle of rim Elbow – straight – over shooting toe Hand – behind ball – avoid rolling Wrist – cocked back on catch (avoid claw) Fingers – wide base – keep thumb back (big hands) Arm – 90 degree angle – make a box Balance – keep weight even on both feet and middle Hips – low and back STARTING POINT
Lift – Rotate at shoulder – get to “Plate of Pasta” position Ball goes up straight Keep one constant speed on lift Imagine ball going up an elevator shaft Hips and legs start to lift also Wrist – Keep it cocked back Arms – Keep the 90 degrees – keep the box Balance – Keep balance (avoid tendency to lean forward or fall backwards) INITIAL MOVEMENT
Arm – continue up elevator shaft – avoid hitch – caused by not having wrist cocked or bend at elbow Shooting hand goes straight through Off hand opens up at wrist – avoid rotating of wrist Full Extension of arms and body RELEASE
SHOT MUST BE REPEATABLE First question… How does it leave your hand? Most players do not know Three methods 5 to pointer finger 5 – 3 – 1 Middle finger 5 – 2 – balanced between pointer finger and middle finger HOW TO TEACH? USE REVERSE CHAIN

Start at Sweet spot Focus on Balance High release Follow Through Ball leaving two fingers BALL MUST GO STRAIGHT By shooting on line, side of backboard or wall it removes the false reinforcement of a ball going in when it was not straight or the ball missing but being shot straight. Focus on form and ball travelling straight – lots of reps TEACH RELEASE 5 FOCUS ON SHOOTING STRAIGHT HIGH REPS
Make off hand stiff Allow only front of knuckles to touch ball Break wrist open as shooting hand is about to release Follow through with off hand- finishes facing basket Common mistakes to avoid Rotation of wrist (thumb pushes ball – release is with outside fingers) Swinging off hand open Not following through with off hand Ball rubs off of off hand TEACH OFF HAND OFF HAND STIFF
Make square – 90 degrees angles Hand faces the wall Rotate arm so that only movement is at shoulder Rotate until holding “Plate of Pasta” From there lift to release point Common Mistakes Elbow turns out Bend of elbow as the lift is done Ball not lifted straight up over toe TEACH LIFT
REINFORCEMENT FORM DRILLS 3 IN A ROW Groups of 3 Make 3 in a row – step back Miss 2 in a row – step forward Peer pressure to make shots
REINFORCEMENT FORM DRILLS WALK THE DOG Pairs (or more) Shoot from free throw line Ball must return to you inside the key Balls that go left tell the shooter that they are shooting right Balls that go right tell the shooter that they are shooting left If shooter “walks the dog”, he keeps shooting
REINFORCEMENT FORM DRILLS WALK THE DOG – TOP OF KEY Pairs (or more) Shoot from top of the key Ball must return to you inside the key Forcing to be perfect from 3 point line Shooter should push up and finish just inside the 3 point line
REINFORCEMENT FORM DRILLS DROP AND POP Spin the ball in front Land 1 -2 with shooting foot and hip forward Catch in shooting pocket – prepare early Eliminate or minimize dipping Feet should land about 1 foot forward Eliminate left or right landing of feet Find rim early with eyes
GAME SPEED DRILLS 2 MINUTE DRILL 2 Balls with a partner Passer hits shooting chin Each shooter must make 20 Shots in 2 Minutes 6 from second block Jump Stop/ Chin Ball / Front pivot / Ball should be up when turn 4 from inside foul line 7 from 15 feet 3 from 3 point line
GAME SPEED DRILLS PARTNER VOLUME SHOOTING 3 groups of partners at each rim Shooters are at each wing and top Shooters remain at location for 1 minute Must move left or right after each shot Passer must hit shooter on shooting chin
GAME SPEED DRILLS CATCH IN TRANSITION Same setup as previous Must go back 15 feet after each shot and return 1 Min – Shoot on catch 1 Min – Through the legs or behind the back 1 Min – Step back

GAME SPEED DRILLS POP OUT SERIES Pass – Jab and come off screen Catch on dominant foot – Square up while landing Be balanced coming off movement and during shot 1 – Curl 2 – Curl – Shot fake, power dribble and power move at rim 3 – Pop for 3 – Catch and pop 4 – Pop and Rip 5 – Pop and pull back 6 – Fade 7 – Step back
GAME SPEED DRILLS PULL UP SERIES Pull up jumpers Get low on last dribble Land balanced – shoot balanced – finish balanced 1 - Attack outside – Shoot off glass in “V” 2- Attack Inside – get to the paint Follow up with pull up 3 Use – Stop and pop, through legs, behind back, step back
