Part II. LSU College Readiness Program

LSU Dual Enrollment Began by pairing high school Advanced Math with university College Algebra and Trigonometry Students have same Homework, Quizzes, Tests, and Final Exam as LSU students using MyMathLab Concurrent enrollment, articulated credit, dual credit, and dual enrollment Teachers present 1/3 of the face-to-face classroom time; students work 2/3 of the face-to-face time in a computer lab environment with teacher support

Redesign Personnel Program Management Overall program administrator Course coordinators for each of the three courses Tutor supervisor Time clock manager Teaching Instructors Second-year and up math graduate students Lab Tutoring Instructors Second-year and up math graduate students First-year math graduate students Ugrad math majors Tech support Ugrad students from LSU ITS

Tutor and Teacher Training 1.Undergrad Tutor Training Program a. Hiring and screening b. Pre-semester workshop 2.First-Year-TA Tutor Training Program a. Pre-semester workshop b. Fall semester Communicating Math course c. Spring semester Communicating Math course 3.First-Time-Teaching-Redesign Teacher Workshop (R2R Manual) 4. Pre-semester meeting for all teachers

“Must Haves” for Redesign 1.The support of both the department administration and the upper administration 2.A strong-willed, thick-skinned program director 3.A core group of instructors and professors dedicated to working hard to make the redesign succeed 4.Space and computers for a learning lab 5.A willingness on the part of everyone involved to be flexible and CHANGE 6. A purpose and an overall plan for redesign

Do’s and Don’ts Do stagger student assignment deadlines to avoid an overloaded lab Do set up homework and quizzes to be due before the new material is taught. Do establish credit hour equivalencies prior to assigning teacher’s schedules. Do increase administrator/coordinator release time to run program. Do designate a person to manage data, a person to prepare the lab schedule for tutors and train them, and a person to become expert at using the time clock. Do prepare for the unexpected. Don’t give up!

Elements of a Sustained Redesign Detailed course syllabus and individual daily schedules Online assessments and carefully chosen assignment settings Settings for individual students Process for importing into and exporting from the gradebook Precise password management Allowance for open homework Rotating lab and efficient time clock management Well-trained teachers and tutors and constant tutor supervising Attention to DETAILS

Part III. Louisiana Department of Education High School Readiness Program

The Plan Professional Development Workshop to train teachers 1.Technology: MyMathLab by Pearson Education 2. Pedagogy: Redesigned course delivery 3. Content: Math homework for teachers Follow with summer refresher and support throughout academic year Full implement in Fall 2011 High School Readiness Program The Plan

High School Readiness Program Region I Workshop 59 8 th grade math teachers from Region I 56 teachers completed the four-day workshop in Fall teachers completed all of the student homework with 100% mastery and received certification 37 teachers plan to pilot this in Spring 2011 with the remainder fully implementing the program in the academic year

High School Readiness Program Region I Workshop

High School Readiness Program Region VII Workshop 60 8 th grade math teachers from Region VII Apr 17-18: Hands-on workshop Apr 19-May 16: Teachers do homework independently May 17-18: Final days of hands-on workshop 24 hours face-to-face and ~20 hours independent work Full implementation in Fall 2011

High School Readiness Program Partnership Success requires LDOE, district, and teacher partnership!

High School Readiness Program LA Dept of Ed will... Present training workshop for 8 th grade math teachers in Fall 2010 and Spring 2011 lead by experienced professionals Provide follow-up support throughout the academic year and summer refresher lead by Site Coordinator

High School Readiness Program Districts and schools must... Provide administrative support to motivate teachers to attend workshop, do homework, and implement program Provide computers for students to use 2/3 of each week Purchase MyMathLab access codes for individual students Supervise and follow-up with support throughout the academic year

Teachers must... Participate in full workshop Learn to use MyMathLab system Adopt redesigned delivery model Complete all 8 th grade homework by end of workshop with 100% accuracy Implement program in classroom following guidelines Make MyMathLab homework a substantial portion of the student’s final grade High School Readiness Program
