How can you apply right triangle facts to solve real life problems? Trigonometry Essential Question How can you apply right triangle facts to solve real life problems?

Lesson 8-7 Applications of Right Triangle Trigonometry (page 317)

when a point B is viewed from a higher point A, ie. ____. horizontal A 1 line of sight 2 B The angles formed between the horizontal and the line of sight are the: ANGLE of DEPRESSION when a point B is viewed from a higher point A, ie. ____. ∠1

when a point A is viewed from a lower point B, ie. ____. 1 line of sight 2 B horizontal The angles formed between the horizontal and the line of sight are the: ANGLE of ELEVATION when a point A is viewed from a lower point B, ie. ____. ∠2

line of sight Angle of Elevation horizontal Angle of Depression line of sight

Example 1 At a certain time, a post 6 feet tall casts a 3 feet shadow Example 1 At a certain time, a post 6 feet tall casts a 3 feet shadow. What is the angle of elevation of the sun? 6’ xº 3’

See the right triangle. ∴ the angle of elevation of the sun is 63º. 6’ xº 3’

Example 2 A person in a lighthouse 22 meters above sea level sights a boat in the water. If the angle of depression to the boat is 25º, how far from the base of the lighthouse is the boat? 25º 22m ? m

The goal is to get a right triangle! See the right triangle! 25º 22m ? m

Now use trigonometry. or ➤ 25º 90º - 25º = 65º 22m 25º ➤ X m

Solve either equation, they both give the same solution … or ∴ the boat is 47 meters from the base of the lighthouse.
