Galveston Hurricane Spindletop

Galveston, TX By 1900 Galveston was one of the busiest ports in the United States. More than $85 million in cotton was exported from Galveston that year. Galveston also served as an entry port for immigrants. From 1840 to 1870, more than 250,000 people from Europe entered the United States through the port of Galveston.

A Leading City Over the years, Galveston claimed many firsts in Texas. – It had the state’s first electric lighting. – The first telephone call made in Texas occurred there. – The first baseball game played in the state took place in Galveston. – The city became the site of the University of Texas medical school. – Its newspaper, the Galveston News, is the oldest continuously published newspaper in Texas. For a time Galveston was the largest city in Texas.

Spindletop Hill Beaumont TX Salt Buildup Started drilling end of 1900, beginning 1901 Struck oil January industry/videos/black-gold industry/videos/black-gold Lucas Gusher…

Striking Gold! The Lucas Gusher Drilling started on October For months, there was no sign of oil. Many believed they had drilled a dry well. January 10, 1901, Spindletop Hill began to shake. The workers heard a rumble. Mud bubbled up from the hole. An explosion of oil shot up more than 100 feet high! The Lucas Gusher shot out some 100,000 barrels of oil a day, more oil than all the other oil wells in the United States combined.

The 1901 discovery of oil at Spindletop ranks as one of the most significant dates in Texas history. Within two years, Spindletop had produced 17,500,000 barrels of oil. As the number of wells grew, production declined. By 1904, production fell to less than 4 million barrels. In time, it fell even more.
