ELECTION of 1800 Jefferson and Adams have a bitter struggle for Presidency Jefferson defeats Adams but ties with Aaron Burr Both are Dem-Republicans Tie is eventually broken in Jefferson’s favor by the House (Jefferson was more qualified—per Hamilton’s argument) 12 th amendment fixes this problem— requires distinct ballots for President and Vice President
