A History of Birthdays It is thought the large-scale celebration of birthdays in Europe began with the non-Christian cult of Mithras, which originated in Persia, and was spread by soldiers throughout the Roman Empire. Originally, birthdays were only celebrated for nobles, such as kings and queens. The first children’s birthdays were celebrated in Germany and were called Kinderfeste. Birthdays in the United States have become very big consumer holidays with very expensive parties held for kids and teens. A popular TV show featuring 16 th Birthday parties put on by rich kids
