Air Line Pilots Association, International EMB 145 Oral Questions Overhead “E” Select “Slide Show” Use the space bar on your computer to advance the presentation and challenge your systems knowledge This is a tool to assist in study of EMB145 systems, but does not constitute a replacement for reading the actual AOM VOL 1 or 2, nor does it contain ALL information contained therein. The actual AOM Volumes are subject to changes and updates.

Air Line Pilots Association, International What EICAS messages will be presented when entering icing conditions?

Air Line Pilots Association, International - ICE CONDITION (blue advisory message) - SPS/ICE SPEEDS(blue advisory message)

Air Line Pilots Association, International How can the SPS/ICE SPEEDS message be cancelled?

Air Line Pilots Association, International By pressing the SPS test button on the ground (perform the SPS test).

Air Line Pilots Association, International How is the ice protection (electrical) test performed?

Air Line Pilots Association, International Ice Protection Test (electrical) APU and Engine Bleed – CLOSE NOTE Wait at least 10 seconds from the time the engine and/or APU Bleed valves are closed before moving the Ice Detection Test knob. Anti-icing buttons (Engine, Wing and Stabilizer) - PRESSED IN Ice Detection Override knob – AUTO Ice Detection Test knob – 1 then 2 NOTE The test knob must be held at least 10 seconds in each test position. For each side, separately check the following EICAS messages: – BLD 1 (or 2) LOW TEMP – ICE DET 1 (or 2) FAIL – ICE CONDITION APU bleed – AS REQUIRED

Air Line Pilots Association, International After closing the bleeds, why must you wait 10 seconds before performing the ice protection (electrical) test?

Air Line Pilots Association, International To allow the valves to fully close.

Air Line Pilots Association, International How is the ice protection (pneumatic) test performed?

Air Line Pilots Association, International Ice Protection Test (pneumatic on the ground) PART 1 Cross Bleed Knob – AUTO APU Bleed Valve – CLOSED Engine bleeds – OPEN NOTE Do not increase above 83% unless oil temperature is 40°C or above or the engine has been running at idle or taxi for at least eight minutes. Thrust Levers – 83% N2 NOTE If engine vibration increases, advance thrust levers, one at a time, to obtain at least 60% N1 for 5 seconds and then return to former setting. Ice Detection Override knob – ALL Ice Detection Test knob – 1 then 2 (no more than 15 secs.) For each side, separately check: — OPEN inscriptions in the buttons are illuminated — ICE DET 1 (2) FAIL caution message on EICAS — BLD 1 (2) LOW TEMP caution message on EICAS — ICE CONDITION advisory message on EICAS — X BLEED OPEN advisory message on EICAS

Air Line Pilots Association, International Ice Protection Test (pneumatic on the ground) PART 2 NOTE X BLEED OPEN and BLD 1 (2) LOW TEMP message may or may not be seen during this portion of the test. The test is valid in either case. Ice Detection Override knob - AUTO or ENG — Select ENG if REF A-ICE is selected ON Thrust Levers – IDLE Engine bleeds – AS REQUIRED APU bleed – AS REQUIRED NOTE If the first attempt fails, the crew may proceed with a second attempt. CAUTION ICE DETECTION OVERRIDE KNOB MUST NOT BE SET TO “ALL” ON GROUND, EXCEPT DURING TEST.

Air Line Pilots Association, International How is the ice protection (pneumatic) test performed in flight?

Air Line Pilots Association, International Ice Protection Test (pneumatic in flight) If the first flight of the day and NO icing conditions exist or are anticipated for takeoff and climb, complete the pneumatic portion of the test in flight. APU Bleed – CLOSED Engine Bleeds – OPEN - Verify TAT 10°C or below and before reaching 23,000 ft. Ice Detection Override knob – ALL for 60 seconds - Confirm all OPEN inscriptions in the buttons are illuminated - Confirm NO ICE-A/ICE ON caution message on EICAS Ice Detection Override knob – AUTO NOTE X BLEED OPEN advisory message may or may not be seen during this portion of the test. The test is valid in either case..

Air Line Pilots Association, International If icing conditions are anticipated anywhere from the gate to 1500 feet what should be selected on the ice detection OVERRIDE knob?

Air Line Pilots Association, International ENG.

Air Line Pilots Association, International If the ice detection OVERRIDE is knob is selected to ENG, what ice protection is provided?

Air Line Pilots Association, International Ice Detection OVERRIDE Knob in ENG: ENGINE AIR INLET -When engine is running WING and STAB A/I -When icing detected; and -When wheel speed > 25 kts.

Air Line Pilots Association, International If the ice detection OVERRIDE is knob is selected to AUTO, what ice protection is provided?

Air Line Pilots Association, International Ice Detection OVERRIDE Knob in AUTO: ENGINE AIR INLET -When icing detected WING and STAB A/I -When icing detected; and -When wheel speed >25 kts; or -When airborne

Air Line Pilots Association, International If the ice detection OVERRIDE is knob is selected to ALL, what ice protection is provided?

Air Line Pilots Association, International Ice Detection OVERRIDE Knob in ALL: ENTIRE BLEED AIR ICE PROTECTION -Regardless of ice detection. -On the ground, WING and STAB A/I are inhibited below a wheel speed of 25 kts.

Air Line Pilots Association, International What conditions must be met for ALL electric sensors to be heated?

Air Line Pilots Association, International - One engine running - TAT when thrust levers advanced

Air Line Pilots Association, International When will the pneumatic cross bleed valve open automatically if the XBLEED valve is in AUTO?

Air Line Pilots Association, International Cross bleed engine starts.

Air Line Pilots Association, International When does the pneumatic system use high pressure bleed air?

Air Line Pilots Association, International - Engine cross bleed starts - Icing conditions - Low thrust settings

Air Line Pilots Association, International What condition would direct you to turn the XBLEED knob to the OFF position?

Air Line Pilots Association, International A bleed leak.

Air Line Pilots Association, International What happens if the PACK button is deselected?

Air Line Pilots Association, International - Pack valve closes - Associated recirc fan is deactivated

Air Line Pilots Association, International When does the left pack valve automatically de-energize?

Air Line Pilots Association, International Below 24,600 feet in icing conditions.

Air Line Pilots Association, International When would you be directed to deselect the RECIRC Button?

Air Line Pilots Association, International - Cabin/Cockpit Smoke or Fumes - Hot or cold soaked aircraft

Air Line Pilots Association, International What components are cooled by the gasper fan system?

Air Line Pilots Association, International - Individual gasper outlets - O 2 bottle compartment - Relay box - Rear electronics compartment

Air Line Pilots Association, International How do you select manual temperature control?

Air Line Pilots Association, International Pull the auto temperature control knob out.

Air Line Pilots Association, International What is a PRSOV?

Air Line Pilots Association, International A pressure regulating and shutoff valve is a modification that replaced the engine bleed valve.

Air Line Pilots Association, International When might the PRSOVs stay closed when the PACK pushbuttons are pressed in?

Air Line Pilots Association, International The PRSOVs only open if needed, and are commanded to stay closed. The may also close during single-engine and some two engine climbs in high ambient temperatures.

Air Line Pilots Association, International Should a wiper be operated on a dry window?

Air Line Pilots Association, International No.

Air Line Pilots Association, International What is the maximum airspeed for operating the wipers?

Air Line Pilots Association, International 160 knots.
