Provides the opportunity for students, to become involved in the improvement journey, and to gain the skills and experience to become more effective and practice safer care. These are skills employers want you to have, and what patients expect you to have! Why Pre Registration Nursing Students?

Success for far: Collaboration Pre Registration Student Nurses (March & September 2010) Cwm Taf Health Board 1000 Lives Plus University of Glamorgan

Timeline of Engagement Concept introduced to Sept 10 & March 10 students, regarding their story as a student, taking patient stories with the Team and its recording in the Health Board. Students encouraged to sign up to student chapter throughout their 3 year programme. Workshops held within the University of Glamorgan. Facilitated by the Patient Experience Team Denise Langford (Senior Lecturer, University of Glamorgan/Lead for Patient Stories) Students stated an interest in the process for training / shadowing for recording of patient stories (to be piloted initially whilst in consolidation/final placement prior to registration). Students to be released from a negotiated clinical practice timeline to participate. Students encouraged to contact Kathryn Doughton, Greg McKenzie or Denise Langford, if they wish to be involved in the process. Practice Facilitators to link with students and identify ‘student champions’ Support given to clinical area and student to enable process.

Feedback on process Link participating areas and University Target participating Areas

Future… That all our future registered nursing workforce will be equipped with the skills to engage in patient stories, thus capturing best practice, learning opportunities and improving the patients experience across the NHS in Wales! ‘Upstream Approach’ however, inclusive of existing multi professional staff. Continue to introduce process to the New Pre registration programme and discuss the possibility of incorporating Patient Stories as a summative assignment into new curriculum!!
