Who am I? Physician Scientist faculty member in the department of dermatology from Brooklyn, NY Training – started early participating in science competitions (several national awards in HS) Brown University’s PLME / Oxford University Brown Medical School and Graduate School HHMI-NIH Research Scholars Program Dermatology Residency at SUNY Downstate

What do I do Clinically? Attending Physician at the Sacramento VA: I see patients at the Sacramento VA, teach dermatology residents, family practice residents, medical students Skin Fibrosis Clinic: focus on treatment of scars using laser and light therapy HIV/ID dermatology clinic Transplant skin cancer clinic General and Procedural Dermatology

Why do I LOVE research? Discovery Contribution to Humanity/Science Innovation Intellectual Stimulation Teamwork Comraderie Teaching Mentorship Fulfillment

How can you get involved in research? Find a mentor and a project that excites you, in a field relevant to your intended future specialty Personality match – between mentor and mentee How much time is required for the project and how much time can you realistically give? Assess your involvement with other activities (school, social, etc)

Maximize your Research Potential Start early in your medical school career (it is never too late to start) Go early and often Stay late Meet deadlines Be enthusiastic and positive Soak up knowledge! Long term goals – for your career and project – where do you want to be in 3/4/5 years? 10?
