Presentation transcript:

Basic Information for STAR Reading and Math Diane Burtchin, Math Coach or ext. 3310

 STAR is a customized math (and reading) test for students to take on the computer  It determines the math/reading skills of each student and measures growth for each student (progress monitoring) 

 STAR Math/Reading should be administered five times per year for grades 2-8 (and three times per year for grade 1)  STAR can be given as often as every other week for at-risk students for progress monitoring purposes (we would like to give it every two weeks for at-risk students)

 We can progress monitor EVERY student and make informed decisions regarding classroom instruction, pacing, intervention, ability grouping, etc.  We can inform parents about their child’s progress in mathematics/reading  This will be a requirement of RTI for reading and for mathematics

 Screening, Progress Monitoring & Intervention ◦ Progress Monitoring and Goals allows you to see the percentile rank for each student and the color coding of red (in need of intensive intervention), yellow (in need of strategic interventions), blue (on watch), and green (nothing needed)  Screening Status allows you to see the percent of completion for your grade level

 Under Reports ◦ Diagnostic- (can do for an individual student or an entire class) gives the statistical breakdowns, bar charts for the Numeration Objectives and the Computational Objectives ◦ Summary- this is good for sorting students by rank so that you can see student performance in order from highest to lowest (sorted by grade equivalence) ◦ Test Record- this will be helpful for students who are tested more frequently because you will be able to see all of the results for a student on one page ◦ Parent- this is the letter that is sent home when the student is progress monitored (3 x per year) ◦ Snapshot- this shows all of the statistics available on the Diagnostic report but for the entire group rather than one student per page

 Learning Progressions- provides detailed definitions, skill prerequisites, worked examples and sample problems to help with instructional planning (can look at a class or individual students)  Instructional Planning- provides a list of recommended skills for instruction based on most recent assessment (can look at a class or individual students)  State Performance- Graphs student progress on the pathway to proficiency on the Ohio OAA Test (can look at a class or individual students)
