Overview Problem Statement Background Design Requirements Proposed Designs Design Matrix Future Work Questions

Problem Statement Design an efficient method to effectively mix and dispense a platinum cured, two component adhesive for prosthetic use

Background Owns Medical Art Prosthetics, LLC Designs facial and somato prostheses ◦ Silicone and polyurethane prostheses Operates out of Madison, WI and Dallas, TX An example of a nasal prosthesis.

Current Methods Uses a one component adhesive ◦ Sets too quickly ◦ Damages prosthesis Gun and Static mixing tube ◦ Bulky and expensive Hand-mixing ◦ Produces excess waste ◦ Difficult to properly measure amounts

Design Requirements Lightweight Compact size Effective mixing Minimize waste and cost for patients Easy and precise application Proper proportions of components

Proposed Design #1: Clip Pack Description Two-part flexible divider pouch ◦ Holds premeasured amounts of each component ◦ Clip separates components ◦ Self-contained mixing

Proposed Design #1 Pros ◦ Easy to dispense ◦ Clip used for application ◦ Easy to manufacture ◦ Inexpensive Cons ◦ Amount of adhesive pre-determined ◦ Must be packaged by company ◦ Possibility of bursting prior to application

Proposed Design #2: One Tube Syringe Description Two-component plastic syringe Mixing rod initiates mixing Components separated by aluminum seal

Proposed Design #2 Pros ◦ Mixes thoroughly ◦ Easy clean-up ◦ Accurate and consistent proportions Cons ◦ Multiple piece system ◦ Expensive for daily use ◦ Amount of adhesive pre-determined

Proposed Design #3: Double Syringe Description: ◦ Two phase system  1. Both components combined in static mixing tube  2. Air pressure pushes adhesive out of tube

Proposed Design #3: Double syringe Pros ◦ Little to no waste ◦ Precise and controlled application ◦ Mixed thoroughly ◦ Controlled portions Cons ◦ More equipment ◦ Bulky

Design Matrix Clip Pack One Tube Syringe Double Syringe Mixing Capability 689 Client interest / future marketability 959 Precision of Application 688 Ease of Use 965 Minimal Waste 759 TOTAL

Future Work Develop barrier to protect prosthesis Continue research on design of product ◦ Finalize design Continue to meet with client to develop efficient designs Construct prototype Testing
