THE SYMBOL OF MARK!!!  The Lion 68kM 68kM Frankie

The Author of Mark  Written by John Mark between 65 and 70 A.D.  AKA Mark the Evangelist  Companion to Paul and Peter  Based on Peter’s stories about Jesus  He did not witness Jesus or his ministry  John Mark was a Christian who came from a Jewish background

Symbol  Mark is the Lion, usually winged  This is because in the book of Revelation the visionary sees about the throne of God four winged creatures: a Lion, an Oxen, a man and an eagle.  The Lion stands for Mark because his gospels starts with John the Baptist calling out in the desert, like a lion

Where? When?  The Gospel of Mark was written in Rome after Nero’s persecutions of Christians.  This is important because Mark portrayed Jesus as a suffering servant  Why?

Audience  Mark wrote for Gentile Christians  However …. He may have written for Christians in Syria and Palestine  Attempting to embolden suffering Christians during the first Jewish revolt against Rome.  Why portray Jesus as a suffering servant?

Jesus in Mark’s Gospel  Jesus … The Authoritative Teacher ○ He took command when calling upon his disciples Mk 1:16-20 The Healer and Miracle Worker ○ He preformed many miracles showing His healing touch Mk 6: 53-56

Jesus in Mark’s Gospel The Compassionate human being ○ Out of all the Gospels Marks portrays Jesus as the most compassionate and most human Mk 9: The Messianic Secret ○ Jesus wanted his identity as Messiah to remain a secret Mk 3: 7-12

Important Passages  Mk 15:16 – 41 (Crucifixion and Death of Jesus) This shows Jesus as the suffering servant This also makes Jesus relatable to the suffering people who read Mark’s Gospel

Important Passages (Cont)  Mk 1: (Temptation of Christ) This is another example of the Human side of Jesus It shows how he was tempted like the people
