MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama ISS HAM TIR OVERVIEW (Kenwood in SM only) Kathy Nordmann EO March 2010

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 2 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama ISS HAM PURPOSE AND VALUE PURPOSE  Provide an effective medium for education and outreach for the ISS Program. VALUE  Allows amateur radio contacts between ISS crewmembers and schools/students world-wide  Available for crew psych support and recreation  Available as a means for communication between ISS and the ground when all other communication resources have failed

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 3 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama ISS HAM OVERVIEW GENERAL  Kenwood radio on-board & setup since Increment 1 in SM  Up until now part of Crew Systems & handled by positions at JSC (BME, Ops Plan, TOPO, Flight, Capcom)  Becoming a payload around ULF-4 stage  Procedures moving from SODF to PODF  Scheduling ISS Ham sessions becomes POIC responsibility  Participating schools are chosen by Amateur Radio on ISS (ARISS) Working Group  Crewmembers doing school contacts is strictly voluntary  PD desires radio be powered 24 x 7  School contacts are time critical and last about 10 minutes  A different ISS Ham radio will be installed in Columbus, but that is a discussion for another day in the future!

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 4 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama ISS HAM OVERVIEW DOCUMENTATION  New POH Volume II, SOP 7.X being written for the Planning process  Changes to FCOH SOP also being made POSITIONS AFFECTED  POD, PPM, OC, PAYCOM ACTIVITY FREQUENCY  Approximately 18 contacts per increment divided among 3 crewmembers equals about 6 contacts per crewmember  Works out to about 1 school contact per week  Number may increase if crewmember is really interested

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 7 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama ISS HAM HARDWARE (SM) ISS Ham Kenwood hardware is currently set up and being used in the SM

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 8 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama ISS HAM PLANNING  ISS Ham contact minus 3 weeks  ISS Ham PD (Kenneth Ransom) submits to PPM & OC, via , schools chosen along with multiple scheduling options (see example)  PD also puts this info into the Ham Contact Radio Log on the DM shared drive & updates accordingly  ISS Ham contact minus days  PPM schedules the chosen school contact in the WLP & informs PD so Ham Radio Contact Log can be updated

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 9 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama ISS HAM PLANNING  ISS Ham contact minus 7-10 days  OC contacts TOPO when activity appears on OSTPV  PD sends OCA message to OC for review (see example)  OC reserves JEDI message number & updates execution note during E-6 review  ISS Ham contact minus 7 days through contact  OC sends OCA message to POD/CTE for approval  OC submits OCA message via FN for review/uplink  TOPO updates Ham Radio Contact Log whenever AOS/LOS times change by more than 1 minute  OC verifies AOS/LOS times have not changed by >1 minute and if so submits the proper scheduling and execution note changes to Ops Plan

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 10 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama ISS HAM OPERATIONS CONSTRAINTS  Only crewmembers who are licensed amateur radio operators may use ISS Ham hardware  ISS Ham passes are time critical because they must happen over the chosen school site  Not scheduled first 2 weeks crew on-orbit, during EVAs, or during vehicles docking/undocking to/from Russian segment FLIGHT RULES  ISS Ham radio cannot be powered during EVAs or during vehicles docking/undocking to/from the Russian segment PAYLOAD REGULATIONS  Define crew preferences as to when they are willing to do school contacts outside the typical work day

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 11 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama ISS HAM OPERATIONS COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS  Activity reminder is very crew dependent. Generally, the crew is reminded the first couple times ISS Ham contacts are scheduled and then we follow their direction.  Every ISS Ham school contact activity has a unique OCA message that must be uplinked  There will always be an execution note with the ISS Ham school contact activity referring crewmember to the OCA message and the approximate rise time of AOS  AOS-LOS refers to line of sight between ISS and the scheduled school. It is not dictated by standard AOS-LOS of station.

MOL The Mission Operations Laboratory Page 12 NASA MSFC Huntsville, Alabama ISS HAM OPERATIONS PROCEDURES  ISS HAM KENWOOD REPEATER MODE OPERATIONS  ISS HAM KENWOOD SCHOOL CONTACT OPERATIONS*  ISS HAM POWERDOWN OPERATIONS  ISS HAM POWER UP OPERATIONS *A shortened version of these instructions is included in each OCA message which crewmember will probably use instead of actual procedure.
