Pesticides of Highest Priority for Oregon WQPMT Diuron - herbicide (“Karmex”, “Direx”) – Detected very frequently, with multiple benchmark exceedances – Found in all PSP watersheds Chlorpyrifos – insecticide (“Lorsban”) – Significant improvements in certain watersheds since PSPs began, but still detections over WQ standard – Detected in multiple watersheds, but not high frequency Malathion – insecticide – Detected in limited number of watersheds – When detected, often over WQ standard

Hood River PSP: What Can Be Achieved? Goal: Reduction in concentrations & frequency of detections over time A result of IPM, alternative pesticides, improved application practices, monitoring, etc. Successes in Fruit Growing Areas along the Columbia

Pesticide-related Water Quality Management: Expansion of the PSP 2013 Oregon Legislature allocated resources: 1. Refine existing PSP monitoring efforts 2. Add 2 new watersheds to PSP program 3. Tighter link between pesticide use, water quality and pesticide disposal… Conduct up to 7 pesticide waste collection events Provide technical assistance in existing PSP areas for biennium

How pesticides collections were conducted: – Grant funded plus contributions from local agencies – Inconsistent and unpredictable schedule – HOWEVER, approx. 250,000 pounds of waste pesticides collected and properly disposed – Collected over 9,000 pounds of rinsed empty container for recycling – Mix of “legacy” and current use pesticides – Amounts have increased for 2 nd events in same areas. How collections occur now… – Multiple events scheduled well in advance each year – Geographic diversity – 5 Events conducted between July – December Participants; 84,013 lbs. of pesticide waste collected Over 4,800 lbs. of triple-rinsed plastic pesticide containers for recycling PSP Element #3: Waste Pesticide Collection Compare to… Washington: >2.8 million lbs. since 1988; 146,854 lbs Idaho: 1.7 million lbs. since 1993; 165,978 lbs. in 2014
