Earth Science E/PO Nuggets Margaret Pippen -LEARN is an innovative project that provides educators with on-site research and training with NASA scientists during the summer and guided research projects that continue throughout the school year. -These educators conduct their own research, with NASA scientist mentorship, through on-site collaboration and virtual meetings.  Teachers are using NASA data from the following programs and missions: CAPABLE, DISCOVER-AQ, ARCTAS, CALIPSO, AERONET, SeaWifs, MODIS, etc plus EPA and NOAA data Sarah Crecelius -NASA LaRC SD Education and Public Outreach staff and volunteers participated in the Virginia Air and Space Center’s Homeschool Appreciation Day, Wednesday, September 17 th, 2014 in Hampton, Va. -More than 1,000 participants explored Earth science through NASA Langley Research Center’s missions and projects -SAGE III/ISS: designing satellites and instrument payloads, around limitations such as weight, to help monitor the Earth’s vital signs -CERES S’COOL Project: assisting the S’COOL team with LIVE cloud observations and making cloud charts to take home to assist in understanding how clouds effect our weather and climate Bernadette Luna -NASA Armstrong “Airborne Research Experience for Educators” workshop brought 25 teachers from across the US to the AERO Institute in Palmdale, CA for a 5-day intensive workshop to learn about computer programming, engineering design, HS3 and ATTREX missions, and grant writing (July 28-August 1) and NASA Wallops HS3/GPM/SMAP brought 28 teachers from across the US for a 5-day intensive workshop to learn about the HS3, GPM and SMAP missions, airborne science and NASA/GSFC/WFF educator resources (August 4-8)

Earth Science E/PO Nuggets Bernadette Luna -teachers learned how to use the NASA Mission Tools Suite for Education (MTSE) website to connect their classrooms to the upcoming Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel mission and other airborne science missions throughout the school year -During both workshops, the DISCOVER-AQ mission was flying over Colorado measuring air quality from the NASA P-3 aircraft -Using MTSE, the workshop teachers were able to chat directly in real-time with scientists flying onboard the NASA P-3 over Colorado.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration LEARN 2014 Poster Session and Workshop Margaret Pippin

Long-term Engagement in Authentic Research with NASA (LEARN) Poster Session & Year 3 Workshop July 7 – 18, 2014 LEARN is an innovative project that provides educators with on-site research and training with NASA scientists during the summer and guided research projects that continue throughout the school year. These educators conduct their own research, with NASA scientist mentorship, through on-site collaboration and virtual meetings. They share and integrate these projects into the classroom, concluding the process by presenting their projects at a final poster session attended by LaRC SD. Year 2 teachers presenting posters Teachers are using NASA data from the following programs and missions: CAPABLE, DISCOVER-AQ, ARCTAS, CALIPSO, AERONET, SeaWifs, MODIS, etc plus EPA and NOAA data. Air Quality Teacher Research Topics cover: Aerosols Ozone Epidemiology CO2 and Oceans Year 3 teachers getting started and selecting research topics O3 Garden at VLM Launching Met Sonde
