Calday Grange Grammar School Year 9 Parents Information Evening February 2016 The Year 10 – 11 Curriculum

The Year10-11 Curriculum The Curriculum will be  challenging  ambitious It will provide the best opportunities  for Sixth Form Study

The Year10-11 Curriculum The Curriculum will be  challenging  ambitious It will provide the best opportunities  to gain a place at any University in the UK or abroad  to gain a Professional Apprenticeship

In terms of qualifications, entry to university is determined mainly on the basis of performance in advanced level qualifications and personal statement but grades achieved at GCSE may be taken into account and there are sometimes specific subject or grade requirements at this level FAQ: Do GCSE grades directly affect university applications?

In fact with the removal of the AS examination as a “stage” towards A level, the grades achieved at GCSE will take on increased significance FAQ: Do GCSE grades directly affect university applications?

Science All students are taught Separate (or Triple Science) in year 10 anticipating that Bi, Ch and Ph are examined as 3 discrete GCSE subjects At the start of y11 some students may be advised to move to Core and Additional Science (sometimes known as Double Award). Bi, Ch and Ph are still taught separately but examined to produce an award equivalent to 2 GCSEs.

The Options Form

Core Subject Choices

Options Form

Completing the Options Form

Option Form Signatures If awarded a 3 or 4 for a recommendation, then a further signature needs to be sought. Forms from these students will then be examined more closely, with parents being consulted if necessary.

Options Criteria  3 choices in order of preference  Subjects will be allocated  in order of student preference  on previous performance  on teacher recommendation  Return on or before Friday 4 th March [There is a Yr9 Parents’ Evening on Thu 25 th February]

The Facts We do not have unlimited staffing or rooms We have talented staff but even they cannot become top class teachers of another subject to suit the choices of that particular year group! Please think carefully about how you place the choices in order. Especially if you are choosing high demand subjects

Problems We will try to give everyone their first choice and Doing this will often fill up the popular subjects (at present Computer Science and Drama) so Students who place one of these subjects as their second choice will often find themselves being offered their third choice

Advice Subjects that are currently popular will fill up with those students placing them as their first choice. If these subjects are selected as second choice then there is a strong possibility that there will not be space on the course Make sure that you are happy to study the subject selected as third choice.

“Coursework” Controlled Assessment still remains in reformed subjects that clearly have a performance, practical or creative element Art60% Computer Science20% Drama60% Music30% Physical Education40%

“Coursework” Controlled Assessment also remains in unreformed subjects Chinese60% Electronics25% Product Design 60%

“Coursework” While many Calday students are more than capable of successfully managing their time in a subject where there is Controlled Assessment, some do struggle. The amount of Controlled Assessment may therefore be a factor to consider when choosing subjects.

Advice for the next few weeks Discuss the reasons for doing or not doing a subject Remain focussed over the coming months Listen to what staff have to say
