Sustainability Brent, Tom, Andrew, Nate
Definition of sustainability A self-sufficient system with little waste of resources, reuse of as many possible resources, the cleanest possible use of resources, and the smallest possible operating cost.
Concepts With our definition in mind we decided to focus in on the transportation around campus and narrowed our ideas down to these four: – Bicycle renting system – Hybrid vehicles for OPP – Biofuels (specifically B20) – P-series fuels
UTV seven gallon diesel gas tank Final Idea We ended up choosing the B20 biofuel to power the UTV’s
Original System Gas Tank EngineExhaust Diesel
New System Gas TankExhaustEngine B20 Fuel 20% Cooking Oil 80% Diesel
Conclusion The 20% bio-fuel would come from the cooking oil used in the dining halls (reuse/littlewaste) Using the B20 fuel to power the UTV’s requires no change to the engine (cost effective) A simple strain of the cooking oil and placed into the tanks of the UTV’s would result in the saving of $30,000 to $40,000 per year depending what the exact amount of hours OPP runs them a year. (cost effective) Lower emissions for the B20 fuel rather than pure diesel (clean use) NOx- nitrogen oxide PM- particulate matter CO- carbon monoxide HC- hydrocarbons
