The ancient civilization of the Mayans had their greatest influence on the Yucatan peninsula. These Native Americans lived in this peninsula from 200 B.C to A.D 1000

The history of Mayans was encrusted on cactus fiber parchment. They developed an advanced writing system. Although much of the parchment did not survive, their carvings on stone have survived

The Mayans created the concept of zero. This concept is used in every society today. The Mayans also found the concept of the theory of positional Value. The Mayans unlike us today used three symbols for there numbers A dot for one, a line for five, and a Sea shell for Zero.

The Mayan astronomers were able to figure out that a whole year is slight more than 365 days. In this this way they were able to develop a very accurate calendar known today as the Mayan calendar.

The Mayan calendar is more than just a system to mark off the passage of time. The Mayan Calendar is believed to be a prophetic calendar that can help us understand the future. The Mayan Calendar predicts the start of a new era 12/21/12.
