Unit 9 Photography Techniques By Lewis Richards 31st October

Technology Development Part 1 Daguerreotype for those who don’t know was produced Louis Daguerre in the late 1820’s to the early 1830’s. Glass plates or the collodion process was one of the major breakthroughs in photography of it’s time and replaced the daguerreotype. It was made by Frederick Scott Archer and Gustave Le Gray in the 1850’s. The idea of Glass plates was to cover plate in substances and make it wet after which it was used then turned into a photograph the downfall of this was that they photographer had approximately 10 minutes to take the picture and process in a dark room which was difficult in the outside world and they had to use mobile dark rooms to process the images in time.

Technology Development Part 2 Cine films were invented in the 1830s with independent invention by Simon von Stampfer in Austria, Joseph Plateau in Belgium and William Horner in Britain. In the late 1880’s the first films that were released were silent films, as cameras could only capture images and not sound the films had no audio because they didn’t have any devices recording the films at the same time. The first known film to be released was in 1888 called the Roundhay Garden Scene by Louis Le Prince. Cine Films became popular in the 1890’s in which they captured moving images for a long period of time, also known as frames which where used to take constant images and then replayed to look like a moving picture or film as it’s known. The most

Technology Development Part 3 Colour Photography was invented in 1855 by James Clerk Maxwell and was then re- perfected by Thomas Sutton in 1861, the process of colour was used by 3 main colours red, blue and green these 3 colours where used to turn black and white images (monochrome) into coloured images. And was a huge breakthrough for the digital industry. Holography was invented in 1947 by Dennis Gabor while researching on improving electron microscopes, because Holography uses light from every direction to capture a image which makes the image look 3D (3 dimensional). At the time of its creation it became a breakthrough in the digital industry, and in today’s industry Holography is used mainly in Holograms and 3D animation.

Technology Development Part 4 Digital cameras were theorized in the late 1960s in New York by Edward Stupp, Pieter Cath and Zsolt Szilagyi. And were used to take a image in colour or black and white depending on the settings of the user and then storing it digitally onto a disk and the importing it to computers or printers to be published. In which it could be edited and then printed on plain paper or photographic paper, although if done on plain paper and digital image can come out looking more pixilated than it would of photographic paper. To date digital cameras are the most used cameras in the world and each time they are improved with higher memory sizes, larger zoom or higher mega pixels ( the higher the mega pixel is the better quality the photo is taken at).

Key Photographers Part 1 Joseph Nicéphore Niépce was the founding father of photography, and supposedly created the first ever photograph. Louis Daguerre played an important role in the development of photography with the Daguerreotype. Fredrick Scott Archer invented the Collodion process which advanced photography further. Simon Ritter von Stampfer created Stroboscope which is the series of moving pictures to make images move or the Cine film as it is commonly known.

Key Photographers Part 2 Dennis Gabor invented holography or holograms as they are known in modern society and most of his work was done in London after he fled Germany during World War 2 because he was Jewish and the first successful holograms wasn’t till Digital cameras were made in New York by Edward Stupp, Pieter Cath and Zsolt Szilagy, but the theory for digital cameras wasn’t processed till later because the technology at the time wasn’t advanced enough to manufacturer or make them.

Photography through the ages Part 1 Photography has evolved massively from when it was first invented cameras started off as boxes and weren’t something you could carry in your pocket or take pictures in colour or high resolution. The old cameras and styles of photography paved the way for the advancement of photography to where it is today, in this modern age you can take and store huge numbers of photos along with them being in colour and the quality of the image is the equivalent of the human eye site if not better.

Photography through the ages Part 2 Although photography has advanced hugely without other technology advancement it may have only been theory like without computer chips and storing data then taking images and storing them on a digital camera might have not come to be. Also photography is a profession in many different forms of images whether it is fashion and clothing to space or even advertising photography is used in the world constantly and seen everywhere compared to before when it was only used by and for the privileged and famous.
