To Capernaum and Beyond Luke 4:31-44

Luke 4:31-33 “ ‎ And He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And He was teaching them on the Sabbath, and they were astonished at His teaching, for His word possessed authority. ‎ And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon,”

“the terms unclean spirit, evil spirit, and demon all seem to be the same, referring to evil powers of darkness who are the enemies of God and man. These powers are organized (Ephesians 6:12) and led by Satan himself.” Guzik

Ephesians 6:12 “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Luke 4:33b-35 “…and he cried out with a loud voice, ‘Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are— the Holy One of God.’ ‎ But Jesus rebuked him, saying, ‘Be silent and come out of him!’

Luke 4:35b-36 “And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. ‎

“And they were all amazed and said to one another, ‘What is this word? For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!’

Luke 4:18 "The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives And recovery of sight to the blind, To set at liberty those who are oppressed;”

“And reports about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.”

Luke 4:38-39 “And He arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was ill with a high fever, and they appealed to Him on her behalf. And He stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her, and immediately she rose and began to serve them.”

Luke 4:40 “Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to Him, and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them.”

John 3:17 "For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.”

Luke 4:41 “And demons also came out of many, crying, ‘You are the Son of God!’ But He rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that He was the Christ.”

Luke 4:42a “And when it was day, He departed and went into a desolate place.”

Mark 1:35 “Now in the morning, having risen a long while before daylight, He went out and departed to a solitary place; and there He prayed.”

Luke 4:42-43 “And the people sought Him and came to Him, and would have kept Him from leaving them, but He said to them, ‘I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well; for I was sent for this purpose.’” ‎

Luke 4:44 “And He was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.”

Acts 10:38 “…God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.”

Luke 5:1-3 “On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on Him to hear the word of God, He was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, ‎ and He saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. ‎‎

“Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, He asked him to put out a little from the land. And He sat down and taught the people from the boat.”

Luke 5:4-7 “And when He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” ‎ And Simon answered, ‘Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.’

“As far as we can tell, Jesus was in the boat with them as He directed this. His presence gave confidence. “It is a blessed thing to see Christ sitting in the boat while you cast out the net. If you catch a glimpse of His approving smile as He watches you, you will work right heartily.” Charles Spurgeon

· “I worked all night and I’m tired.” · “I know a lot more about fishing than a carpenter does.” · “The best fishing is at night, not in the day time.” · “All these crowds and loud teaching have scared the fish away.”

· “We already washed our nets.” · “Jesus may know religion but He doesn’t know fishing.”

Luke 5:6-7 “And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink.”

Luke 5:8-11 “But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken,

Luke 5:10 …and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” ‎

Luke 5:11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.”

Matthew 4:19-20 “Then He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ They immediately left their nets and followed Him.”
