Introduction to Scientific Inquiry using Dataloggers and Glogster

Science Dept Mission To make Science fun and relevant in our lives

Science Dept Vision WRS students to be independent learners and innovative thinkers in Science

Outcomes Students –start off secondary science education on fun and relevant note –engage –make more meaning of learning

Lesson Properties Subject: Science Topic: The Scientific Method, Measurement, Time and Speed ICT Used: Dataloggers and Motion Sensors, Glogster Level: Secondary One Target Audience: Express/Normal Academic No. of Classes Involved: 6 Class Size: 40 Year of Implementation: From 2010 to 2010

Synopsis and Objectives Build and modify a mechanical racer

Synopsis and Objectives Build and modify a mechanical racer Scientific Method 1.Make Observation 2.Analyse, infer and predict 3.Plan experiment to test hypothesis 4.Record and analyse your results 5.Discuss with others 6.Summarise your results and draw conclusions 7.Communicate your findings to others

Synopsis and Objectives Build and modify a mechanical racer Scientific Method Measurement techniques and instruments Metre Rule Vernier Calipers

Synopsis and Objectives Build and modify a mechanical racer Scientific Method Measurement techniques and instruments Use datalogger and motion sensor to determine speed

Datalogger and Motion Sensor

Synopsis and Objectives Build and modify a mechanical racer Scientific Method Measurement techniques and instruments Use datalogger and motion sensor to determine speed Report using Glogster

Overview Level –Sec 1 Express and Normal Academic Thinking skill –Experimental Inquiry Duration –6 weeks Pedagogy –Self-directed learning –Collaborative learning

Pedagogy Self-Directed Learning (SDL)

SDL Construct –Management and Monitoring of Own Learning SDL Indicator –formulate questions, generate own inquiries –plan and manage workload and time SDL Activity –continuously think about how to modify their racer –need to complete other parts of the project (measurement of dimensions and online report) within a specififed time frame

Modify Racer

SDL Construct –Extension of Own Learning SDL Indicator –apply learning in new context SDL Activity –presented with a distance-time graph and they have to interpret the graph to obtain the speed of the racer Pedagogy Self-Directed Learning (SDL)

Pedagogy Collaborative Learning (CoL)

CoL Construct –Effective Group Processes CoL Indicator –Students contribute own ideas clearly and consider other points of view objectively. CoL Activity –freely suggest their own ideas –presenting their findings on Glogster.

ICT value-add Datalogger and Motion Sensor –provides authentic data –focus on calculation of speed –instant feedback allows more time for scientific inquiry and creativity Glogster –creation of highly visual multimedia elements –engagement –ownership of learning

Students’ Work Student Glog 1 Student Glog 2 Glogster.edu

Assessment Glog assessment rubrics communicated

Issues Most of the Sec 1E/NA classes were taught by UGTs. Students misinterpreted that the Science subject is just fun and play. CA 1 Science results varies greatly from class to class.

Areas for Improvement Periodic reflections throughout learning journey via platform like Edmodo Comment on each others’ hypothesis, experimental plans, etc through Glog to generate more substantive conversations
