The Romanian Flag. The Romanian flag is a tricolour of dark blue, yellow and red with colours arranged in vertical strips. It is hoisted around towns and cities on Flag Day. The tricolour was first used in 1834, not as a National Flag but as a merchant flag.

Facts of Romania Official Name: Romania Location: (Southeastern) Central Europe Population: 19,942,000 (March 2014) Official Language: Romanian Area: 92,043 sq. miles (238,391 sq. kilometres) Capital: Bucharest

The Location of Romania Romania is situated in the southeastern part of Central Europe and shares borders with Hungary to the northwest, Serbia to the southwest, Bulgaria to the south, the Black Sea to the southeast, Ukraine to the east and to the north and Moldova to the east.

Romanian Customs, Traditions and Folklore. People in the small towns and villages outside the cities have changed their lifestyle very little over the years. It is not uncommon that the villagers will use horse-drawn carriages as their main means of transport. Romanians are naturally hospitable people and always eager to share stories of their village with travellers passing-by. You might even be invited into their home for a home-cooked traditional Romanian meal. Festivals feature brightly ornamented costumes with traditional dancing. Wood carvings, skilfully woven carpets, and pottery are some of the elements of traditional Romanian culture.

The Romanian National Anthem Deteaptă-te, române, the title of the Romanian National song. It translates to Awaken the Romanian in English. The anthem was written by Andrei Muresanu and the music was by Gheorghe Ucenescu both in 1848.

This is the Lyrics of the National Anthem. Priviti, marete umbre, Mihai, Stefan, Corvine, Romana natiune, ai vostri stranepoti, Cu bratele armate, cu focul vostru-n vine, ?Viata-n libertate ori moarte!" striga toti. Preoti, cu crucea-n frunte! caci oastea e crestina, Deviza-i libertate si scopul ei preasfant, Murim mai bine-n lupta, cu glorie deplina, Decat sa fim sclavi iarasi in vechiul nost' pamant!
