PriMove Infrastructure Development Consultants Pvt. Ltd. THE TIGER TOILET For improved waste decomposition in pit latrines PriMove Infrastructure Development Consultants Pvt. Ltd.

Rural Toilet Options Pour flush Twin pit latrines Septic Tanks

Key Challenges Septic Tanks Expensive Treatment not effective as effluent is discharged in open gutters Septic tank fill up and need special equipment for emptying Not a practical option for large number of construction due to cost and problems with effluent management and de-sludging

Key Challenges Twin pit toilets Two pits necessary for effective management Need more space and cost (many times one pit is built ) Anaerobic conditions develop in deeper pits resulting in odor problems Toilets with single Pits fill up and become ‘defunct’

The Tiger Toilet - Background Project initiated with support from Gates foundation by London School of Hygiene & Tropical medicine – to research options for increasing life of a pit latrine Various options ranging from chemical methods to bio-additives studied The tiger toilet shortlisted – lab tested for two years Trials in different Geographical locations/contexts Uganda: Urban slum Myanmar: Humanitarian camp India: Rural

The concept In nature the Soil ecosystem is the most efficient system for decomposing organic matter The Tiger Toilet Creates a complete ecosystem in the pit which digests the waste rapidly Uses natures bio-degradation system by providing a complete soil food chain Maintains completely aerobic environment -no odour

Components of the Tiger Toilet Super structure, pan and P- trap One Pit Filtration layer Media and bedding Earth worms

First pilot in Pune district Pilot project implemented in Pune district Pits being monitored for last 12 months Rate of filling of pit, COD and TSS before and after being monitored

Results The decomposition of waste is very rapid Aerobic conditions are maintained – no odor or flies Reduction in COD and TSS The rate of pit filling is very slow – and the accumulation is that of vermi compost

Way forward Packaging of the technology Tiger toilet kit – Pan, P trap and molded pit lining (optional) Drainage layer Culture media Production unit being developed Supply chain – regional distributors, local sanitary marts, SHGs Identification, Training of local contractors

Pilot project The tiger technology has recently won an award from ‘ Grand Challenges – Canada’ to develop ‘Bold ideas’ to make an impact on public health Part funds available for executing 500 toilets with tiger technology Objective is to develop a business blueprint to expand the use of this technology

THANK YOU…….
