How to Help Those Who Have Wandered from the Truth (James 5:19,20)
Brief Review For the past seventeen weeks we have sought to examine the theme, “How To” Christianity taken from the book of James. In this our eighteenth and final lesson we will discover what we can do to help those who have wandered from the Lord into the realm of unfaithfulness.
How to Help Those Who Have Wandered from the Truth The Reasons Why Some Choose to Wander from the Truth The Rescue and Recovery of Those Who Have Wandered The Reward for Caring
The Reasons for Wandering Some stop seeking first the kingdom of God. (Matthew 6:33) Some are overtaken in a fault. (Galatians 6:1) Some develop a greater love for money than for God. (Matthew 6:24; I Timothy 6:9,10) Some don’t heed what they have heard. (Hebrews 2:1-3)
The Reasons for Wandering Some become enslaved by a particular sin. (Hebrews 12:1) Some choose to stop submitting to God, and they also stop resisting the devil. (James 4:7) Some stop being self-controlled and vigilant. (I Peter 5:8) Some choose to leave their first love. (Revelation 2:4)
The Reasons for Wandering Some feel neglected, underappreciated or even rejected. Some don’t receive the amount of encouragement they need when they are hurting. Some have been hurt by the moral failure of a church leader. Some have become disappointed when brothers and sisters in Christ have fought and argued among themselves.
Rescue and Recovery “…and someone turns him back” These are beautiful words that speak of loving compassion and care for the soul of another. Jesus Himself spoke of this matter in Luke (15:1-7).
Rescue and Recovery There are two texts that speak about HOW we are to go about this process of reaching out to those who have wandered. (Galatians 6:1-3; II Timothy 2:24-26) 1.This task is reserved only for those who are truly spiritual. (Galatians 6:1) 2.This task must be approached in a spirit of gentleness. (Galatians 6:1) 3.This task must be conducted with a willingness to examine one’s own life. (Galatians 6:1)
Rescue and Recovery 4.We must do so with the idea of gladly bearing their burdens. (Galatians 6:2) 5.We must do so with a spirit of absolute humility. (Galatians 6:3; II Timothy 2:25) 6.We must do so with the idea of being patient. (II Timothy 2:24) 7.We must do so by teaching them the word of God. (II Timothy 2:24)
The Reward for Caring The person who cares enough to rescue and recover a soul that has wandered from the truth has the joy of seeing that individual: 1.Come to understand the truth once again (II Timothy 2:25) 2.Come to their senses (II Timothy 2:26) 3.Escape the snare of the devil (II Timothy 2:26) 4.Come to repentance (II Timothy 2:25) 5.Have their sins covered (James 5:20) 6.Have their soul saved from death (James 5:20)
Why Don’t We Care? Truly we have seen how beautiful it is to help a precious brother or sister in Christ be restored to a right relationship with God. Why then do we all not do more reaching out? –We give the excuse that the preacher is paid to do this work or that it is the job of the elders. –We are afraid that others may reject our help. –We are ignorant of the needs of those around us. –We are apathetic. –We are lazy.
Some Resolutions Let us resolve that we will start caring for the well being of our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Let us resolve that we will do unto others as we would have them do unto us. Let us resolve to get involved!
