Facts About Tobacco One puff = 4,000 harmful chemicals Thousands of these chemicals cause cancer More than 400,000 people die from smoking every year. It can be smoked or chewed. A pack of cigarettes can cost up to $11.

What is in Tobacco? Nicotine- addictive, or habit forming drug found in tobacco – Once you are addicted the body has a strong need for it. This is what keeps people smoking over and over again. – It makes your heart beat faster – Raises blood pressure – Causes dizzines – Upset stomach – Reduces the amount of oxygen your blood carries to the brain.

What is in Tobacco? Tar- a thick, dark liquid that forms when tobacco burns – Tar coats the airways and lining of lungs – Lungs coated with tar can become diseased. Carbon Monoxide – A colorless, odorless, poisonous gas produced when tobacco burns. it damages the brain and heart by reducing the amount of oxygen available to these organs.

Other Deadly Substances Cyanide – A deadly poison that is commonly found in pest control products. Formaldehyde – A burning, stinging gas that is used as a preservative in the laboratory. Methyl Ethyl Ketone – Used in solvents and harms the CNS.

Forms of Tobacco Cigarettes – Contain shredded tobacco leaves – Have a filters to block some of the harmful chemicals to try to make it more safe No such thing as a safe cigarette – Flavored cigarettes might smell nice and taste good, but they have even more chemicals than a regular cigarette

Forms of Tobacco Cigars and Pipes – Contain shredded tobacco leaves – Cigars contain up to 90 times more cancer causing chemicals than in cigarette smoke More likely to develop mouth, tongue or lip cancer.

Forms of Tobacco Smokeless Tobacco – Chew or snuff – Chewing tobacco is also called dip of spit. – Snuff tobacco can be sniffed or chewed. – Chemicals do not pass through the lungs and nicotine is absorbed through the tissues and the bloodstream. – Contains same chemicals as cigarettes.
