C-TIP Real Time Traffic Monitoring (RTTM) and Dynamic Route Guidance (DRG) January 20, 2010 Paul Belella In association with:

Agenda  Project Overview  RTTM Overview  DRG Overview  RTTM/DRG Use Case  Data and Interfaces  Important Factors  Project Status

Project Overview  Primary Objective: Make tailored real-time traffic information and route guidance available to motor carriers to mitigate congestion and reduce delay  Major Project Components  Design and Development of RTTM Module  Design and Development of DRG Module  Implementation of both in Kansas City  Connection with C-TIP  Two of several components  Fully integrated with other modules  Scalable and transferable to other locations

Project Overview

Important Factors:  Collecting the right data  Multiple sources (trucks, roadway sensors, etc.)  Accurate depiction of current conditions on roads of interest  Packaging data into useful information  Designed to properly interpret the data available to it  Formulating information that can be acted upon confidently  Making information available when it is needed  The intended use underscores importance of timeliness  End users will need to interpret the information and formulate decisions quickly

RTTM Overview  Telemetry Processor  Receive telemetry data  Calculate link-based travel times  KC Scout Interface  Receive traffic information from KC Scout  Forward link-based travel times to KC Scout (If Desired)  Missouri Statewide Data Interface  Receive traffic information from MoDOT  Forward link-based travel times to MoDOT (If Desired)  Traffic Report Generator  Formulate trip-specific travel time reports  IMEX Interface  Forward travel time info for dissemination to dispatchers and trucks (via WDU)

DRG Overview  DRG will extend the RTTM functionality to provide alternate navigation to help trucks avoid congestion and minimize travel time  Approach  Calculate “best route” from location to destination  Monitor and update route as truck approaches “decision points”  Build on RTTM and WDU applications and devices  Leverage latest in dynamic routing research and practical applications  Integrate fully with C-TIP

RTTM/DRG Use Case KC Scout TMC Roadway Sensors Eyewitness Reports Incident Reports Truck Telemetry Traffic & Route Data RTTM Application WDU Application WDU or 3 rd Party IMEX Application DRG Application MO Statewide Data

Data and Interfaces Receive Data -Truck ID - Location - Time - O/D New Truck ID? Generate trip record to be stored for 24 hours Retrieve trip record Calculate travel times Search predefined O/Ds for requested O/D Compare travel time to historical records Within predefined tolerance? NoYes Identify optional route from predefined fixed routes Append data to stored truck ID record Return data: -TT - Age of data - Records from last 24 hrs Add annotation to travel time record Poll data sources for TT data on a regular interval (TBD) Generate TTs for a predefined set of O/Ds Generate historical data based on O/D, day, time of day

Important Factors  Accurate input data (reliable travel time/speed reporting)  Timely input data (low data latency)  Reliable historic data (for comparison to current data)  Rapid alternatives calculation (for quick response to user requests)  Accommodation for roadway limits (i.e., restricted routes, geometric constraints, clearances)  Significant challenges  Validating DRG output  Accommodating human behavior variables  Getting truckers to trust DRG recommendations

Project Status  Development of RTTM and DRG Logic  Defined travel time calculation methodology  Developing principles and methods for alternate route assessment  Development of RTTM and DRG Design  Defined origin/destination (O/D) pairs  Defined O/D-based default and alternate routes  Formulated high-level design structure  Defining message content and structure  Definition of vehicle telemetry approach  From existing telemetry systems  From WDU devices  Processing methodology/tools

Project Contacts  Randy Butler – FHWA Project Manager   (202)  Paul Belella – RTTM/DRG Project Manager   (703) x104  Ron Schaefer – C-TIP Project Manager   (618)
