Designer Babies By: Meghan, Reagan & Mathieu

Revolutionized  The term designer babies in implying common modifications of children to select designer qualities in a child and has been used to describe the babies that would result in human gametes, zygotes or embryos or to be genetically engineered. SkRepeDc6o

Pros & Cons to Designer Babies Cons  If the process is not done carefully, the embryo could be accidentally terminated.  Could create a gap in society. “Designer” babies would most likely be better looking, smarter, etc. This could create “classes” between designer and non designer babies.  Geneticists are not perfect people and cannot 100% properly evaluate every gene. It is more than likely mistakes will be made.  The procedure is not cheap, and not everyone would be able to afford it. Pros  Increases human life span up to 30 years.  Reduces risk of inherited medical conditions such as obesity, anemia, diabetes, cancer, and many more.  Prevents genetic diseases such as down syndrome, Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s Disease, Spinal Muscular Atrophy, and many others.  Keeps up with modern technologies.  Enhancement of children.

How Do They Work ?  1. Creating an Embryo with In-vitro fertilization (IVF).  2. Removing a single cell from that embryo within the first 5 days of creation  3. Genetically testing the cell.  4. The parents decide whether to discard the embryo or implant it in the mother's womb.

Government Opinion  The Quebec government now funds up to three in-vitro fertilization(IVF) treatments for couples having difficulty conceiving. Ontario is considering a similar program and other provinces may follow suit.

Religious Perspectives  The Vatican forbids the creation of Designer Babies because they believe a person is a person before its alive. Which means the dignity of the embryo should be treated as a person before implantation, it merits unconditional respect from the moment of conception. They do believe in some gene therapy in some fertility treatments.

What do the people think?  designer-babies designer-babies  Humans have already genetically modified animals and crops said Sheldon Krimsky a philosopher. Who argued in favor of a ban on the same for human babies. "But in the hundreds of thousands of trails that failed, we simply discarded the results of the unwanted crop or animal.“  Many people wonder of the side effects if any or should it be up to the parents?
