1. What disaster does the place where the nurse stays suffer? 2. Can she communicate with the local people easily? Why? 3. How does she feel when thinking of her experiences as a member of MSF? Floods. Yes. Because many people can speak English and French. She feels that she has been very lucky to be able to help others and do something worthwhile.

Read the diary carefully and try to find the answers to some more questions. 1. Where do you think she works most of the time? 2. What’s the situation in the flooded area? 3. What dangers do you think she feels about her job? 4. What dangers and problems do you think the people on the island face?

1. Where do you think she works most of the time? 3. What dangers do you think she feels about her job? Usually, she is working in areas that have no water such as Kenya and Sudan, where famine is the problem. Sometimes there is lots of fighting. There is not enough clean water. 2. What’s the situation in the flooded area? Everything is in chaos. The whole island is flooded. People have fled to the mountains. The hospital is badly damaged, and is completely unusable.

4. What dangers and problems do you think the people on the island face? The outbreak of water-borne diseases such as malaria and typhoid. People who have regular medication cannot get hold of it in a disaster. It’s difficult for cuts and wounds to heal and easy for bacteria to spread. Shelter and access to food and clean water are big problems.

However, things are entirely here. The problem people meet here is not the lack of water but the mud and water everywhere. It is not for people to travel from place to place.
