Response to the Gilded Age Gilded – cheap center covered w/ thin layer of gold (coined by Mark Twain in an 1873 book) Gov’t followed the idea of “Laissez–Faire” or “hands-off” policies

Rapid industrialization, immigration, and urbanization led to national growth and prosperity. Rapid industrialization, immigration, and urbanization led to national growth and prosperity.

Rapid growth also caused poverty, unemployment, poor working conditions and political corruption.

Many Progressives believed that political action and reform were required for progress in society.

What is Progressivism? Progressive Movement: 19 th c. reform movement that addressed political, economical, social, & moral injustices It’s an umbrella term that covers different problems in American society

Progressives were not a single unified movement. Their efforts fell into four categories: The Progressives: Their Goals and Beliefs Social Reform Political Reform Economic Reform Moral Reform

Economic Reforms

Economic Reformers sought to curb the power and influence of wealthy interests. The focus was on the following issues: Economic Reform » Monopolies » Trusts » Gap between Rich and Poor

A Little Math… The average wage of an unskilled worker 100 years ago was about 18¢ an hour. That means it would have taken the worker almost 20 minutes to earn enough money to buy a 5¢ Coca-Cola.

Nelson Rockefeller is shown here toying with the White House in the palm of his hand. In the background, Washington D.C. has been transformed into a series of factories.

An act to protect trade and commerce against unlawful restraints and monopolies. Sherman Anti-Trust Act

16 th Amendment Income Tax! How can that be a good thing? A “Progressive Tax” – the more income you make, the more tax you pay. Reduces the gap between rich and poor!

The debate continues today! The debate over federal income tax continues today! It was a topical issue in the 2012 Presidential debates What do you think?

“The 1900 House”

Closer 1 st Period After looking at the graphs today, which two statistics surprised you the most? Why?
