Engaging Community & Donors to Support Youth All In for Youth, United Way Calgary & Area United Way Worldwide, Community Leaders Conference May 2016

Emerging Trends in Calgary 2010 Complex social issues Competition for philanthropic dollars High donor expectations Changing campaign focus for corporations Resulted in: NEED to unite the community around an issue of HIGH concern

Choosing the Right Issue Based on research, reviews and community consultation: Kids, Poverty, Strong Communities Needed to resonate with a broad audience Needed to be a compelling issue Drew on our knowledge of Product Development Reduction of Calgary’s High School drop-out rate

The Issue 26.4% of Calgary’s grade 12 students were not completing high school on time 3000 students per year… Those who do not graduate:  Earn less  Are more likely to be unemployed;  More likely to access social services throughout their lives.

The Issue Estimated annual cost to society for individuals without a high school diploma = $15,850 Forecast showed 65% of new jobs require post secondary education Only 6% of jobs open to people with less than a high school diploma In the next decade, this investment will save society $118 million
