Turn and Talk: What do these pictures have in common?

So thinking about culture… What makes people want to use things from other culture? How do cultural ideas get to other places? What might make you think another culture is “cooler” than your own? What might make you think it isn’t.

What is cultural diffusion? Cultural diffusion is the ideas and practices of one culture that get spread to another culture.

What is culture? Culture—a simple word that is not so simple. Culture is a word for the “way of life,” or how groups of people do things.

How does culture spread? Cultural traits spread in many different ways including, migration, trade, media/internet, war, and colonization.

What exactly is diffusion? Experiment time! What will happen if we add a drop of food coloring to a glass of water?

Why does proximity matter? Proximity (or proximo in Spanish) is an important element in how and why cultural traits diffuse because culture will more likely spread to the places nearest to it first. The closer in location two cultures are, the more similar will likely be.

Exit Ticket Please make sure all answers are written in complete sentences. 1.What is cultural diffusion? 2. Which of the following is not a common way cultures spread from one place to another? a. Migration b. Trade c. The internet d. Government regulations 3. Using the map, choose a country that is less likely to have a lot of French speakers.
