Childhood Moved to Port Huron, Michigan in 1854 Mother drew him out of school for “home-teaching” (Age 7) Worked at the local rail station selling newspapers and food (Age 12) Became a telegraph operator (Age 15) Came up with the “automatic repeater”. (Age 16) Moved to Boston. (Age 21)

Education Edison was pulled out of traditional school by his mother and was “home-taught” Edison also taught himself by reading independently No high school No college

Family Married Mary Stillwell Children- Marion Estelle Edison (1873) Thomas Alva Edison, Jr. (1876) William Leslie Edison (1878) She died thirteen years later 2 nd wife- Mina Miller Children- Madeleine Edison (1888) Charles Edison (1890) Theodore Edison (1898)

Work Experience Worked 12 hours a day, 6 days a week for Western Union Constructed and patented the vote recorder, which was later turned down by the Massachusetts legislature Moved to New York City in pursuit of a new job.

The Electric Lamp (1875) The light bulb was invented in October of 1879 and first demonstrated to the public on New Year’s. The electric lamp uses carbon-filament in a vacuumed space. After many trails and errors of finding the perfect material to light the bulb, Thomas Edison just happened to mistakenly stumble upon a carbon threading, which was perfect for the job he wanted to complete.

The Kinetoscope (1892) In inventing this device, Thomas Edison sought to design "an instrument that does for the eye what the phonograph does for the ear." The invention rotates a series of photographs on a reel and projects them onto a larger screen. He planned to connect The Kinetoscope to a phonograph in order to create motion pictures with sound.
