What is a circuit? A set of connected electrical components that provide one or more complete paths for the movement of charges. A set of connected electrical.
 A ‘shocking’ discovery.  In order for current to flow, the pathway must be a continuous, uninterrupted loop called a circuit.
Series Circuits Series circuit: a circuit in which all parts are connected end to end to provide a single path for the current. Ammeters are always placed.

Circuits A deeper look into different types of circuits

What we’re now learning: Circuit SeriesParallel

Series Circuit A series circuit has a single path for the current

Series Circuit There is only one path for the electrons to flow This means the current must flow through all loads

Series Circuit Example: Christmas lights (old version)

Series Circuit What is the problem with this type of circuit??

Parallel Circuit A Parallel Circuit has multiple (at least 1) paths for the current to flow

Parallel Circuit Charges can move through several different paths

Parallel Circuit Example: Household wiring

Parallel Circuit What is good about this type of circuit?

Which is which?? What is example #1? What is example #2?

Switch In a circuit, it is important to be able to turn it off and on. A switch is a device that can open or close a circuit. A switch can be used to turn on or off the circuit, in this example the light.

Switches If a switch is ON, the circuit is closed IF the switch is OFF, the circuit is open

Switches Is this switch ON or OFF?? Is the circuit OPEN or CLOSED?

Short Circuits An electrical short circuit occurs when an electrical connection is made where one should not be Caused when: Wires touch when they shouldn’t Water touches the circuit The circuit overheats

Short Circuits Why this this bad?? Can result in damage to the components (light bulb, battery, etc) Electrical shock or fire may occur

Short Circuits How can this be prevented? FUSES! Fuses prevent unwanted short circuits Fuses have metal links inside them that open when overheated This stops the current from flowing
