Romeo & Juliet Literary Terms Plot – sequence of events in a literary work Theme – central message or insight into life Setting – time and place of the action of the story Foreshadowing – the use in a literary work of clues that suggest events that have yet to occur Conflict – struggle between opposing forces Characterization – act of creating and developing a character in a story Foil – a character who provides a contrast to another character

Irony – techniques that portray differences between reality and appearance or expectation and result Aside – short speech delivered by an actor in a play, other characters do not hear the speech Soliloquy – long speech expressing the thoughts of a character alone on stage Monologue – speech by one character in a play, story, or poem Pun – A play on words (Ex: I used to be a sanitation worker, but the city dumped me.) Prologue – Preface; introduction to a work of literature Comedy – literary work, especially a play with a happy ending Tragedy – work of literature, especially a play that results in a catastrophe for the main character
