BIOLOGY “BIO-”: LIFE “-OLOGY”: THE STUDY OF CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE
1. All living things are: Made of Cells CELL: Collection of living material enclosed within a barrier -basic unit of life Unicellular: made up of one cell Multicellular: made up of many cells Prokaryotic- NO nucleus Eukaryotic- have a nucleus (and other membrane bound organelles) of Cells. Cheek cells
2. ALL LIVING THINGS ARE: ORGANIZED Cells: basic unit of life Tissues- made of cells Organs- made up of tissues Systems- group of organs
3. ALL LIVING THINGS HAVE A GENETIC CODE (DNA) DNA- codes for all genes and proteins
4. ALL LIVING THINGS: REPRODUCE asexual reproduction: has only one parent sexual reproduction: requires two parents Asexual Sexual
5. All Living Things: Use & Need Energy!! AUTOTROPH: produce own food HETEROTROPH: must consume food Carnivores: meat-eaters Herbivores: plant-eaters Omnivore: eat plants & meat DECOMPOSER: breaks down dead material for food
6. All Living things: Change and have a lifespan GROWTH: increase in size and shape DEVELOPMENT: mature over time LIFESPAN: the length of time for which a person or animal lives or a thing functions Growth Development
7. All Living things adjust to their surroundings: Adjustment: short term change Stimulus: action/sound Reaction: response to a stimulus
8. ALL LIVING THINGS: ADAPT TO LONG TERM CHANGES Adaptation- trait that makes one more “fit” (better able to survive) Ex: fur color, claws, lungs, etc. Homeostasis: maintaining a stable internal environment Ex: sweating, panting, shivering, etc.
Daily Quiz: The following are all examples of the characteristics of life. Identify each one and write your answers in your journal. A.Adapt D. genetic code G. Respond to stimulus B.Made of cells E. Grow and develop H. Homeostasis C.Reproduce F. Use/need energy 1.You eat a hamburger for lunch. 2.A baby gains 3 pounds in one week and begins to recognize voices. 3.A polar bear has white fur to blend in with the snow. 4.Your start to cry whenever you get a shot at the doctor’s office. 5.You begin to shiver because it is cold outside. 6.Red and white particles make up part of your blood. 7.A chick breaks out of an egg.
