“Shrek” – Status quo Ordinary life – hero’s everyday world (beginning) We meet Shrek living alone and happy in the swamp
Call to adventure Faced with invitation or challenge Initially refuses the call Lord Farquad sends fairytale creatures to swamp and Shrek doesn’t want them there
Assistance/Mentor Guide or mentor who helps hero on his journey (protect or point the way) Hero will also have allies/helpers who journey with him (sidekick) Donkey accompanies Shrek on his journey and overs sage advice
Departure/Crossing threshold Leaves ordinary world by crossing the threshold (known to unknown) Shrek leaves the swamp for the forest
Trials/Challenges Challenges or temptations that try to steer hero off course The dragon, his insecurity, dealing with donkey
Approach Hero faces biggest ordeal/greatest fear Realizes he loves Fiona when alone back at swamp but is afraid she won’t love him
Crisis/Ordeal Hero’s darkest hour where he faces death or dies and is reborn Having to fight for Fiona and hope she loves him back
Treasure/Reward Reward from his battle (power/knowledge) Wins her love and realization that what matters is on the inside
