Overview Place Past Dreams Today Celebrations Challenges Questions

Place

Seattle Pacific University 43 acres in North Queen Anne 4k+ students

Place

Ryan Ingersoll Head of Library Technology

Past

Weaknesses – Dim projector – Sterile environment – Computers in one configuration – Computers only used for classes Opportunities – Computers ready to be replaced – New library director – Limited one-time funds available – Ripe for change!

Past

Dreams

Transcend space and technology – Mobile, Flexible, Simple, Wireless Invest in multipurpose educational technology – BYOD, Tech Desk check out Maximize limited financial resources – Stewardship, Quality, 3-year cycle Partner across the university – ITS, CIS, Facilities Sandbox environment for the library – Place for Innovation

Dreams

Today

Transcend space and technology – Mobile Dr. D. Christopher Brooks, researcher at Univ. of Minnesota, “Most important piece of technology is the table.” – Flexible Adapts for different pedagogical teaching and learning needs and provides a collaborative workspace – Simple No complicated technologies, mimics other classrooms – Wireless Epson whiteboard, keyboard, mouse

Today Invest in multipurpose educational technology – BYOD Space for students to bring their own technology they are comfortable using HDMI – Tech Desk check out Apple MacBook Pros reserved for classes, available for library check out when not in use Boot Camp capability (OS X or Windows)

Today Maximize limited financial resources – Stewardship Accessed about $14k in one-time funds Continues 3-year replacement cycle Reduce traditional desktops, provide more tools, and multi-purpose computing devices – Quality Epson projector KI tables Apple computers with cart (higher resale value, less hardware repairs)

Today Partner across the university – ITS (instructional technology services) Support with funding and design Created similar space in their office Research and faculty relationships – CIS (computer and information systems) – Facilities Paint Installation Furniture

Today Sandbox environment for the library – Place for innovation Meetings Variety of teaching sessions with numerous table configurations Librarians can teach how they want for an individual class Faculty can use MacBook Pros to supplement student- owned devices or access special software (on OS X or Windows)

Today What did we do?

Today 20x Apple MacBook Pros, Kensington locks, Bretford Cart iMac server – iOS Server app, Profile Manager, and DeployStudio KI Enlite mobile tables 3 mobile whiteboards (opposed to whiteboard paint)

Today

Celebrations

Librarians and faculty appreciate the flexibility of the room – Archives, comp exams, general sessions Interactive projector doesn’t require extensive training Ad hoc study room for students when not in use (mobile furniture and whiteboards) MBP check out is high – Computers on every level of the library

Celebrations No thefts of MBPs No damage done to MBPs Faculty need fewer MBPs as more students bring their own Low cost English professor using projector and Camtasia to diagram sentences for Blackboard.

Challenges

Extensive time labor required during first two quarters for setup/teardown Apple TV Windows management requires significant time and finesse Epson whiteboard surface isn’t whiteboard marker friendly Epson iOS app isn’t powerful

Challenges Furniture setup…
