sport in Italy

Association football Football is the most popular sport in Italy. The Italian national football team is considered to be one of the best national teams in the world. Italy's club sides have won 27 major European trophies, making them the most successful nation in European football. Italy's top domestic league, the Serie A, is one of the most popular professional sports leagues in the world. Association football, commonly known as football or soccer, is a sport played between two teams of eleven players with a spherical ball. The game is played on a rectangular field with a goal at each end. The object of the game is to score by using any part of the body besides the arms and hands to get the football into the opposing goal

Athletics is an exclusive collection of sporting events that involve competitive running, jumping, throwing, and walking. The most common types of athletics competitions are track and field, road running, cross country running, and race walking. The simplicity of the competitions, and the lack of a need for expensive equipment, makes athletics one of the most commonly competed sports in the world. Athletics is mostly an individual sport, with the exception of relay races and competitions which combine athletes' performances for a team score, such as cross country.

Cycling The Giro d'Italia is an annual stage race bicycle race held in Italy with occasional excursions into other countries. The race started in 1909 to increase sales of La Gazzetta dello Sport; it is now run by RCS Sport. It has been held annually, except during the two world wars. The race distance lengthened and more foreigners competed as the race gained prominence and popularity. The Giro is usually in late May and early June. The route changes each year but the format stays the same, with at least two time trials, the Alps, including the Dolomites, and the finish in Milan. There are usually 21 day-long segments (stages) over 23 days, with two rest days.

Riders compete by recording the lowest overall time for the complete distance. The rider with the lowest time is the leader of the race and wears a pink jersey. There are other contests: the points classification for sprinters, the mountains classification for climbers, young rider classification for riders under 25, and a classification for teams.

Tamburello

Tamburello is a court game invented in the northern provinces of Italy during the 16th century. It is a modification of the ancient game of pallone col bracciale, bearing the same general relation to it as Squash does to Racquets. Nowadays various forms of tamburello are popular in many nations of the world. This form is played at professional level in Italy where there are two varieties: the first kind taking place in a specialised sports venue called a sphaeristerium (sferisterio in Italian), with a lateral wall which permits the ball to rebound; the second kind being played in an open playing field without a lateral wall.

Formula One Formula One, also known as Formula 1 or F1 and referred to officially as the FIA Formula One World Championship, is the highest class of single-seater auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA). The "formula", designated in the name, refers to a set of rules with which all participants' cars must comply. The F1 season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix (from French, originally meaning great prizes), held throughout the world on purpose-built circuits and public roads. The results of each race are evaluated using a points system to determine two annual World Championships, one for the drivers and one for the constructors.

The first World Championship for Drivers was won by Italian Giuseppe Farina in his Alfa Romeo in 1950, barely defeating his Argentine teammate Juan Manuel Fangio. This period featured teams managed by road car manufacturers Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Maserati, all of whom had competed before the war. The first seasons were run using pre-war cars like Alfa's 158

Italy’s national swimming team The Italian national swimming team represents Italy in International swimming competitions such as Olympic Games or World swimming Championships. Human swimming is the self propulsion of a person through water for recreation, sport, exercise. Federica Pellegrini is an Italian swimmer, she holds the women's 200 m freestyle (long course and short course) and 400 m (long course) freestyle world record, but finished fifth in both events at the London 2012 Olympics. At the 2009 World Championships in Rome, Pellegrini became the first woman ever to break the 4 minute barrier in 400 m freestyle with the time 3: Pellegrini is the first female Olympic champion in the history of Italian swimming; she is also the only Italian swimmer to have set world records in more than one event.
