UYC – Membership History

Membership History Summary The data shows overall membership increase of 4 memberships between 2014 and It must be noted that the figures show memberships not individual members. (eg 1 family membership could typically represent 4 people. I’ve shown on the slide the two (in revenue terms) important types of memberships; the family and the single members. The other memberships include, associate members, cadets, junior and student memberships as well as honorary members.

Membership History Summary Good News & Bad News Good the total membership numbers have increased. Bad – there is an increase in the number of members with no boat, reducing the boat fee income Good – the revenue from the memberships has increased, because of the increase in the number of family members. Bad we have had 3 unallocated moorings this year leading to a loss of revenue of 3 x £475 = £1425 Good - We’ve also had an increase in the number of members who have signed Gift Aid forms, so again an increase in the income from this. UYC – 2015 / 2016 Winter Storage Ian has already sent out the winter storage form to cruiser members. I plan to get the form on the website. Please fill in and return to Wendy

UYC – 2016 Proposed New membership types There is a proposal later in the meeting to introduce two new memberships types. 1.An apprentice / trainee membership in line with student membership for under 25 year olds earning less than £100 a week. 1.A non-sailing parent membership in line with crewing membership. A one year membership for a parent whose child joins as a cadet or family member as they wish to sail or learn to sail.

Rationale for new membership types Trainee / Apprentice members 1.A number of our younger members instead of going to University take up apprenticeships or trainee positions, in these positions they earn considerably less than minimum wage. So to ask them (or their parents) to pay full membership does put of many of these members staying at the club. Which obviously is a problem to us not only in that we loose members but also these members tend to do quite a lot of duties at the club, so we loose this pool of volunteers.

Rationale for new membership types Non sailing parent membership We do get quite a few enquiries from prospective members whose children have expressed an interest in joining the club to sail or learn to sail. At present they can only do so if either the whole family joins at a cost of £327 or one parent and the child joins at a cost of £291 (if over 14) or £264 (if under 14), plus the training course fees. This does put off quite a number of the enquirers as they do not know if their youngsters will enjoy the sport and it’s a large outlay for them to try a sport. My suggestion is we offer a half price adult membership (in the same way as is offered to sponsored crewing members) for a one year trial, so the income would be £114 for the adult plus £37 or £64 for the child, plus training course fees. It would then be up to us as a club to convince them that they want to stay as members in subsequent years and pay full fees.
