20.6 Reaction Pathways

Assessment Statement Deduce the reaction pathways given the starting materials and the product.

Teachers Notes Conversions of more than two stages will not be assessed. Reagents, conditions and equations should be included. For example, the conversion of 1-bromopropane to 1-butylamine can be done in two stages: 1-bromopropaane can be reacted with potassium cyanide to form propanenitrile which can then be reduced by heating with hydrogen and a nickel catalyst.

Reaction pathways for HL

Task Recreate the reaction pathways diagram and place in the conditions for each reaction (e.g catalysts, reagents etc). Recreate the reaction pathways diagram stating with bromoethane and deducing what products you will get. When you need to react another organic molecule, use your own choices.
