SIU IT RCC Mission The Research Computing and Cyberinfrastructure (RCC) group started with goals of centralizing Information Technology activities at SIU, reducing redundancy, leveraging buying power and having more efficient use of resources through standardization. Our aim is to strengthen campus capabilities in research related activities to meet current and future requests in terms of both technological and organizational aspects. The ultimate goals of the RCC team are advancing contemporary research capabilities by providing reliable storage, research and compute bandwidth, optimization effort and creating a great enabling experience for researchers.

SIU IT RCC Research Storage IT Research Computing currently leases 100 TB of storage from our IT Systems Dell Compellent SAN environment. Dell FS8600 filer products front-end the storage to common CIFS network file shares. Research storage is available to researchers upon request and consultation. Currently about 50 of the 100 TB of research storage has been allocated to researchers. If you know of a researcher who is hampered by research storage needs, please let them know about IT Research Computing.

SIU IT RCC High Performance Computing We see three levels of computing involved in research. We see the desktop level, a new mid-range HPC level and the national level. Lab Examples: Geisler Lab, Fakhoury Lab, New Materials, etc New SIU Mid-Range Centralized HPC computer: Discovery? XSEDE: Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment, National Level Compute Resources.

SIU Research Bandwidths

Current Bandwidth Solutions We are currently filling out the paperwork to acquire a 100 GHz lambda or wavelength of light between SIU Carbondale and the Starlight facility in Chicago. Upon the 100 GHz wave, 4x 10 Gbps connections will be constructed. Upon 1x 10 Gbps connection, we will purchase 5 Gbps commodity I1 internet. Upon 1x 10 Gbps connection, we will connect to I2 via MREN. We will use the other 2 10 Gbps connections as needed. This is an increase of about 5X our current capabilities. Finally we will employ the I2 commercial peering service.

SIUC Core and Edge Networks 2015

XSEDE: Extreme Science Engineering Discovery Environment

Grant Writing: NSF CC*DNI Program This year we wrote proposals for three of seven program areas: 1. Data Driven Networking Infrastructure for the Campus and Researcher, $500, Campus CI Engineer $400, Network Integration and Applied Innovation, $90,000 State Level Gigabit Community Grant Challenge Gbps fiber optic based network connections in Carbondale
