* Getting you thinking: Extension: Which self report method do you think it preferable (questionnaire or interview) and why? Share the example of an interview that you found for homework.

* Self report measures -Interview

* Learning objectives : By the end of this lesson you will be able: * To describe interviews. * To understand the different types of interviews: structured, semi structured, unstructured. * To evaluate the use of this method.

* The scenario In groups of three you each need to design an interview about one of the topics below. You need to arrange your questions to either be a: Structured interview, Semi structured interview, Unstructured interview. Read through the description, design of and evaluation of using interviews in your booklet. Views towards using animals in research. Views on making maths and English compulsory until 18. Views on making alcohol illegal.

* The scenario 2) You now need to take it in turns to use your technique on each of the people in your group. You have a maximum of 4 minutes per person Stop watch link Stop watch link 3) Discuss how you found using and being a participant in each type of interview. What were the benefits and limitations of each?: Extension: What technique did you prefer being a participant for and why?

* Evaluation 4) In your group of three, share the evaluation points you have come up with. 5) Decide which self report technique you think is the better one to use and why. Extension: Complete the ‘apply your knowledge’ questions on page 205.

* Check your understanding Decide which self report technique would be the most appropriate and why: 1) You want to find out how useful smokers find the NHS ‘stop smoking’ campaigns. 2) You are interested in the steps people take to help with reducing pollution. 3) You want to know how many people exercise regularly and what type of exercise they do. 4) You want to find out how many stressful life changing events people have experienced in the past year. Extension: Design an interview and/or questionnaire for one of the above.

You should state the hypothesis you are setting out to test. * In your answer, refer to: * an appropriate method of investigation * materials/apparatus and procedure.
