UN Women Country Offices UN Women is building country office capacity increasing number and seniority of staff – 17 countries 2011 – Extended to further 21 countries UN Women offices working on social protection include: – Africa: Burundi; Cameroun; DRC; Liberia; South Sudan – Latin America: Argentina; Bolivia; Brazil; Guatemala; Paraguay; Uruguay – Caribbean: Barbados; Grenada; St Kitts and Nevis; St Vincent and the Grenadines; St Lucia ; Trinidad and Tobago – Asia and Pacific: China, Indonesia, Laos; Thailand; Vietnam; Pacific (Fiji Solomon Islands Vanuatu, Kiribati, Samoa) – South Asia: Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan – Europe: Tajikistan, Moldova, Kyrgyz Republic

Examples of UN Women’s work on social protection Working with gender advocates: – In Thailand, Indonesia, The Philippines strengthening the capacity of gender advocates on the rights of women migrants, rural women and women in the informal economy – In Cameroun working with legal advocates to improve the conditions of domestic workers; creating a network of organisations focused the domestic workers agenda – In Bangladesh working on evidence based advocacy for social insurance for women effected by climate change – In DRC to develop a national advocacy plan for gender responsive economic and labour policies

Examples of UN Women’s work on social protection: Supporting policy formulation with a gender perspective: – Paraguay supporting the Secretariat for Women in the formulation of a national policy on care – -Uruguay supporting National Institute for Women to formulate the National System of Care – Argentina – supporting consolidation of social protection across five ministries – Pakistan supporting finalization of provincial policies on Home-based workers and Labour and Social Protection Laws

Examples of UN Women’s work on social protection: Supporting implementation – Moldova and Tajikistan. Information Bureaus for rural women offer advice on issues ranging from the job market and social protection, to agriculture and land laws, using a “one-stop shop” model. – Argentina. Evaluation of the impact of cash transfer programmes in gender dynamics at household and community level – Barbados and Eastern Caribbean - Supporting law reform- both substantive and procedural- through input into the drafting of model legislation (including child support guidelines) within the OECS and CARICOM processes addressing the principles, responsibilities, application and enforcement of child support provisions. – Pacific - assisting municipalities and rural local governments to implement decent work standards and social protection for women in markets and informal trade

Examples of UN Women’s work on social protection: Strengthening the evidence base on gender and social protection – In Brazil studies on gender and race equality perspectives of the Brazil without Poverty Plan and the Bolsa Familia – In Brazil, Ecuador and Panama research on food security and cultural-socioeconomic conditions of afro rural communities – In Laos technical assistance to collect sex- disaggregated data in partnership with ILO and Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare and National Statistics Bureau
