MURCIA AND ITS HUERTA The variety and diversity of the Region of Murcia is not only reflected in its multiple cultural traditions. It is particularly present in the wealth of natural habitats, in the number of fascinating spots that we can find both on the coast and inland.
Murcia, a communion between history, culture, and art. The old city of Murcia was founded in 831 by Abd-Al- Rahman II at the centre of the valley, at a place where Iberian and Roman settlements were thought to exist in ancient times. The town’s most emblematic symbol, completely integrated in its urban landscape, is certainly the Cathedral ( ), a clear example of different architectural styles.
Other places of interest are… the Town Hall of Murcia, the Romea Theatre and the Casino all with outstanding decorating features. The Casino The Romea Theatre
Murcia has always been in intimate contact with its huerta. But… What does huerta mean? It is our fertile land, where fruit and vegetables are grown.
In many of the town bars and restaurants we can enjoy the cuisine that is based on fresh products from the region’s lands, the Huerta de Murcia
It’s important to mention the variety of sweets and desserts from our region: paparajotes ( lemon leaves covered in sweet batter and fried and sprinkled with sugar … delicious... and just a word of warning, one does not eat the leaves!) arrope (a type of syrup) tocino de cielo (similar to caramel custard) Membrillo or Dulce de Membrillo is a sweet, very dense jelly made from the fruit of the quince tree…
Although these are not products from La Huerta, There is nothing better than enjoying a range of different “tapas” such as… Matrimonios “anchovy in brine combined with a fresh anchovy in vinegar) Marineras (potatoe salad on a breadstick with an anchovy). Pulpo al horno (baked octopus) Caballitos (battered shrimps)
But the most typical food from La Huerta Murciana is… Ensalada murciana, Café de puchero, patatas asadas, sobrasada con queso, zarangollo, salchichas, longanizas, tocino, lomos, morcillas, migas, michirones…
Pork plays an important role!!!
Among the tools and objects from La Huerta… Visitors can discover a typical barraca or thatched farmhouse, a modest peasant dwelling that has existed for over four centuries…
…as well as the water-wheel of Moorish origin that reflects the important role that water has played and continues playing in the development of our region.
Handcraft Most of our local products are made of clay. We have toys made of cardboard, stationary wickerwork, ironwork and embroidery, without forgetting the typical nativity scenes, works of art inspired by Salzillo's work.
Celebrations in Murcia are full of colour, shows, music and folklore. You can see and feel the colour and atmosphere of the Huerta around the city; at El Bando de la Huerta (Proclamation of la Huerta) when everyone is supposed to dress up in the Regional costume, similar to the clothes people wore in the past.
This is the typical dress of the Region of Murcia
We have a very special song LA PARRANDA
THIS IS OUR HOMELAND YOU WILL ALWAYS BE WELCOME!!!
