Acas and Effective workplaces

LEARNING OUTCOMES FOR THIS LESSON Understand the role of Acas including the part it plays in individual grievances Appreciate why prevention is better than cure in employment relations Understand the concept of an effective workplace.

It is essential that employers and employees have a good working relationship Employment relationship can have a major effect on productivity and the success of a business. Recognising that a wholly-independent impartial third party can help the relationship between employers and employees, the government set up Acas INTRODUCTION

ACTIVITIES Part of Acas' work is with individual employees. Employees who feel they have been wronged can apply for a tribunal hearing. Acas tries to make peace before the dispute reaches court.

EQUALITY, DIVERSITY AND EFFECTIVE WORKPLACES Employees should be treated fairly Acas believes that effective workplaces are determined by the right behaviour supported by policies and procedures. Acas works to prevent disputes.

Staff and customers understand the business Managers and employees communicate openly People feel valued and can talk confidently about their work Everyone is encouraged to improve their skills and knowledge both for their current job EFFECTIVE WORKPLACES

Employers encourage new ideas Treating people fairly Employers provide a safe place to work. The pay and reward system is fair People feel confident about discussing flexible working times Management and employee representatives have good relationships Managers and employees know about and properly use formal procedures.

CONCLUSION Good working relationships are vital. The government set up Acas to help employers and employees avoid disputes Acas is increasingly concentrating on helping organisations to avoid disputes.
