Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) – Clubs in Nassau, Suffolk and Queens – Fall and Spring Schedule Fall Season – September through November Spring Season – March through June – Usually 9-10 games per season – LIJSL provides schedules, referees and rules governing how play is conducted – U10 Boys and Girls play on Saturday SSI – Suffolk Soccer Interleague – Ensures all players have an opportunity to play – Referees provided by home club – Promotes learning the game with competition – U10 Boys and Girls play on Sunday League Structure 5

The Club has policies and structure in place to help the families it serves: Players – Evaluation of players for travel teams are based on their skill level at time of tryout – Skills evaluated by Board Members and Professional Trainers Objective Independent New look at players – Skills evaluated include ball handling, passing, striking, technical knowledge of the game Coaches – Board selects Head Coach – Head Coach selects from a group of approved coaches based on players selected for a team – Criteria – Soccer experience, soccer coaching experience, ability to work with parents, players and co-coaches, and coaches from other teams – Selected coaches must attend LIJSL coaches meeting to be approved – CPR/AED certification Trainers – Each team will select a club approved trainer to work with the team at training sessions and games Club manages the coaches and trainers to maximize development Policies/Structure 6

Twice per week training with team 1 game on the weekend Tournaments – Teams generally play in tournaments on the following holiday weekends: Memorial Day Father’s Day Labor Day Columbus Day Cup Games – NY State Cup First round (fall) - 3 games Later rounds take place in the spring – Long Island Cup (Spring) Bracket type tournament Teams also sometimes decide to have fun get- togethers to build team unity. Develops skill on the ball  Increases number of touches and control  Improves confidence Develops intelligence  Promotes faster decisions and better awareness Develops partnerships within the team Small Sided Games The benefits of Small-Sided Games for players include more fun, more touches on the ball and more tactical decisions. The style of play will allow players to learn different positions, learn tactics quicker, increase fitness and allow players to be more emotionally and socially involved — creating a more fun and enjoyable game. Included in the U.S. Soccer Concussion Initiative are specific changes to rules on substitutions and heading for certain age groups. Those changes included:  Modify substitution rules to allow players who may have suffered a concussion during games to be evaluated without penalty  Eliminating heading for children U10 and under. o Please note that U11 is listed in the U.S. Soccer Concussion Initiative document because U11 players can be 10 years old at the beginning of the season  Limiting the amount of heading in practice for children between the ages of 11 and 13 In addition to the safety initiatives, the following modified rule should be implemented:  When a player deliberately heads the ball in a game, an indirect free kick (IFK) should be awarded to the opposing team from the spot of the offense.  If the deliberate header occurs within the goal area, the indirect free kick should be taken on the goal area line parallel to the goal line at the point nearest to where the infringement occurred.  If a player does not deliberately head the ball, then play should continue.

Birth-Year Registration calendars will now align with the start of the calendar year and run from January to December, rather than August to July as it had previously. For example, a U-15 player (players 15 years old or younger) would have a birth year of 2000 (Jan. 1 through Dec. 31) for the 2015 registration year. In 2016, U-15 players would be born in 2001 or earlier. Birth-year registration applies to all player age groups and not just players age 12 and younger. The initiative will align registration with the international standard, while simultaneously providing clearer information on player birth dates to combat ‘relative age effect’.

In addition to the club fees, there are a number of additional expenses throughout the year. They may include: Cost of trainer Tournaments Team apparel (Sweatshirts, training shirts, etc.) * Travel expenses if team travels to a tournament *(Uniforms are included with club registration) Expenses 14

Boys: May 21 and June 4 Girls: May 22 and June 5 Player Selection: June 6 All tryouts are at the POBSC Travel Fields Arrival time/sign in 3:00 pm Tryouts begin promptly at 3:30 pm to approximately 6:00pm Wear a white tee shirt (no jerseys) – Players will be given pennies with numbers on them. Wear cleats, shin guards and bring a size 4 ball and plenty of water and a light healthy snack. Board members, off age coaches and professional trainers will evaluate all players based on skill. 17
