EGI Community Forum 27 March 2012 EMSO, EMSO, a Research Infrastructure of the ESFRI Roadmap, is the European network of fixed seafloor and water column observatories constituting a distributed infrastructure for long-term monitoring of environmental processes A large European users community has been gathered around ESONET-NoE ( , which has been providing many inputs to the shaping of EMSO 2 EMSO is a Marine Research Infrastructure: permanent, large-scale, deep-sea laboratory to observe and study Marine Ecosystems Climate Change Geo-Hazards Geo-Hazards

EGI Community Forum 27 March EMSO-ERIC will have:  Central co-ordination (statutory seat with central management)  Regional Team (in charge of the EMSO nodes) Arctic Iberian margin Marmara Sea Ligurian Sea W. Ionian Sea Hellenic Arc Secretariat (Italy) …RDs… EMSO is in the Preparatory Phase ( ; 12 Countries involved) with the aim to establish the legal entity EMSO-ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) in charge of coordinating the infrastructure The EMSO-ERIC statutes were distributed to and amended by the Funding Agencies to arrive to the final acceptance & signature (within 2012) Full Members: Italy, France, Germany, UK, Spain, Greece Observers: Ireland, Norway, Turkey New Full Member candidate: Romania

EGI Community Forum 27 March CIVIL PROTECTION AUTH. POPULATION WARNING CIVIL PROTECTION AUTH. POPULATION WARNING EMSO ARCHIVE CENTER Web server & DB USERS streaming audio & video web forms … GRID storage CPU computing GRID storage CPU computing EMSO e-infrastructure

EGI Community Forum 27 March EMSO e-infrastructure EMSO is going to exploit the power of the European GRID Infrastructure to create a data infrastructure to serve the wide communities of scientists studying marine mammals’ acoustics, oceanography, geophysics, astro- particle physics, and ecology. A special objective is to also provide open access and shared tools for collaborative studies with state-of-the-art analysis algorithms. The distributed computing paradigm of the EU e-infrastructure will be used to provide large CPU and storage capacity.

EGI Community Forum 27 March EMSO & GRID A pilot activity to explore the capabilities offered by the EGI Grid was recently agreed with the Italian Grid Initiative as part of the NGI_IT User Support strategy. This activity aims at deploying a Grid-based solution for the data repository and for the basic tools needed to manage data acquired at the Western Ionian Sea node near Catania. To bootstrap the activity a dedicated VO for INGV is being set-up and will be deployed in some production sites together with Grid services such as the VOMS server and the replica catalogue.

EGI Community Forum 27 March EMSO & GRID In case of successful Gridification of the real time data and software applications, the development of a web-based interface will start to ease the data management and the usage of the ported applications. The outcome of the pilot will also be used to involve other partners and other NGIs in supporting EMSO Grid activities. If other NGIs are interested, the pilot activity could evolve towards an EGI Virtual Team.
